Mothers Day is one of the best days of celebration. It is celebrated in the month of May. Stay with me as I take you through the history behind Mothers day celebration.

The Soldier, Doctor, Teacher, and Lawyer, of every child is the mother. Her license to practice all these professions never expires. Mothers are wonderful gifts given to us.

The world didn’t know how to honor our beloved mothers in unison on a dedicated day until one person decided to blow a wind of change through it.

Mothers’ Day is celebrated every year, usually on the second Sunday of May. It is a day dedicated to honor our beloved mothers for their motherly love and care. But, who actually started Mothers’ Day day and why?

On 12th May 1907, Ann Jarvis of Philadelphia held a memorial service in honor of her late mother at her late mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Jarvis promoted the wearing of white as tribute to deceased mothers and red or pink was also accepted in honor of living mothers. However, modernity has changed all these things.

Jarvis wanted the world to recognize the importance of mothers to their families and society at large. She therefore, led a campaign to establish a public holiday to honor mothers.

History behind Mothers Day celebration

In modern times, the day is celebrated by sending gifts and wishing mothers and potential mothers a happy Mothers’ Day on social media and other platforms. It is a day to remember and honor our mothers for the love and support they have given to us in our upbringing.

In about 5 years of her campaign, almost every state in the US began observing the day as one dedicated to honor mothers and in 1914, president Woodrow Wilson made the day a national holiday and it began gaining popularity internationally.

Mothers’ Day soon became popular and was gradually being commercialized as it was associated with sending of gift cards among others.

Unfortunately, Jarvis wasn’t happy with this development and so she fought unsuccessfully against the very holiday she fought to establish. She died in 1948.

Mothers’ Day day has now been expanded include all who are capable of playing motherly roles and so females in general, are often honored on this day.

So, the next time you have the opportunity to honor your lovely mother, remember Jarvis and honor her as well.
