WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has announced that there is no longer a “global health emergency” because to the COVID-19 outbreak. This information was shared at the 15th meeting of the International Health Regulations (2005) Emergency Committee, which discussed the global spread of Coronavirus illness (COVID-19). Members of the Committee were quoted as saying “high levels of population immunity to SARS-CoV-2,” “a decreasing trend in COVID-19-related deaths,” and “a decline in COVID-19-related hospitalizations and intensive care unit admissions” in the statement.

The Committee’s stance has changed throughout the course of the past few months. They recommended shifting to long-term management of the COVID-19 pandemic despite persisting uncertainty posed by the likely evolution of SARS-CoV-2.

The Director-General of the World Health Organization agrees with the Committee’s recommendations for dealing with the current COVID-19 pandemic. The statement read, “He has determined that the health situation caused by COVID-19 is now chronic and does not meet the criteria for a public health emergency of international significance (PHEIC).

Three years after it originally announced its highest level of alert over the virus, the statement signals a huge step towards ending the pandemic. The weekly death toll from the virus was estimated at over 100,000 in January 2021, but by April 24 of that year, it had reduced to just over 3,500.

According to the head of the WHO, the epidemic killed at least seven million people. Dr. Ghebreyesus cautioned that the threat was not resolved and that the emergency status may be resumed if the situation warranted it.

With the 2023-2025 COVID-19 Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan in mind, the WHO Director-General will convene an IHR Review Committee to advise on Standing Recommendations for the long-term management of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. States Parties are encouraged to maintain adherence to the issued Temporary Recommendations during this period of transition. In a statement, the DG said, “I want to thank the Chair, the Members, and the Advisors of the Committee for their active participation and assistance over the past three years.

The report went on to say that the worst thing any country could do in light of the revelation was to “let its guard down,” meaning that it would remove the systems it had developed or tell its citizens that COVID-19 was nothing to worry about. In January of 2020, the World Health Organization first recognized COVID-19 as a global public health emergency. One of the most significant shifts in the epidemic was the introduction of vaccines, which saved the lives of millions of people.
