Arsenal’s interest in Nathaniel Brown
Arsenal is reportedly interested in acquiring Frankfurt‘s Nathaniel Brown, a German international full-back. While Brown has performed well for the Bundesliga side, a summer move to a larger club is anticipated, with the Gunners closely monitoring his situation. The potential transfer has raised questions due to the club’s existing options at left-back.
At first glance, Arsenal’s interest in Brown might seem unusual. Although he has played as a right-back, a position of interest for Arsenal given injury concerns with Jurrien Timber and Ben White, Brown, who is left-footed, has only featured there twice. Manager Mikel Arteta typically prefers players to operate in their natural full-back roles. The club already has options like Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly, and the presence of Piero Hincapie, in the left-back position.
Despite these existing options, a deeper look reveals the strategic reasoning behind Arsenal’s pursuit of Brown. Lewis-Skelly is expected to transition into a midfield role following a strong end to the recent campaign. Both Calafiori and Hincapie, while capable at left-back, also share the ability to play as left-sided centre-halves.
Strategic depth and tactical considerations
The ability of players like Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie to play as left-sided centre-halves is a key factor. This position is less physically demanding and currently lacks a clear backup for Gabriel Magalhaes when he is unavailable. Unlike William Saliba, who has Cristhian Mosquera as cover, Gabriel does not have an obvious replacement who isn’t already assigned to another established role. Arteta has previously shifted Saliba to the left and paired him with Mosquera in Gabriel’s absence.
Bringing in Brown could provide Gabriel with more opportunities for rest and allow either Hincapie or Calafiori to move into a central defensive role. Brown’s style as a full-back could also complement potential attacking changes. There is interest in replacing Gabriel Martinelli with Morgan Rogers, a player who could operate from the left but in a more internal capacity rather than as a traditional winger. Brown’s playing style would align well with a profile like Rogers or Leandro Trossard.
In a tactical setup, Arsenal’s back four, consisting of Timber, Saliba, and Gabriel, could effectively transform into a back three. Brown would then join the attack down the left flank.

Brown, who is 22 years old, is part of Julian Nagelsmann’s World Cup squad and has experience playing various left-sided positions at club level. He is anticipated to leave Frankfurt this summer, with Bayern Munich and Arsenal among the interested clubs. The Athletic reports that Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director, has identified four right-back targets, including Brown, Tino Livramento of Newcastle, and Ivan Fresneda of Sporting CP. Victor Valdepenas, a 19-year-old defender from Real Madrid, is also being monitored by Frankfurt and Arsenal.
Financial standing and transfer market activity
Arsenal’s financial position is reportedly strong, which could support their transfer ambitions. The club is expected to have a healthy budget for summer upgrades, with speculation indicating a desire for a right-back, central midfielder, left-winger, and a striker. This comes after a season where Arsenal celebrated a Premier League title win and reached the Champions League final, where they were defeated by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.
The club’s revenues are reportedly increasing significantly, a positive shift from past periods where profits were often achieved by selling key players. This improved financial health allows the club to invest heavily in the market, with the owners, the Kroenkes, backing manager Mikel Arteta’s plans. This investment has been seen as vindicated by recent successes on the field.
Beyond Brown, Arsenal is linked with several other players. Fabio Vieira is seeking a permanent move to HSV, with Arsenal potentially accepting a fee between €10-15 million. There are also reports of a bid for Julian Alvarez, with Arsenal showing interest. Other targets include Bradley Barcola, Dani Olmo, and Mateus Fernandes. Additionally, Josh Nichols, a 19-year-old academy graduate, is set to leave Arsenal for NK Kustošija on a free transfer from July 1.
