Manchester City is currently engaged in discussions with Chelsea regarding compensation for Enzo Maresca. These negotiations are focused on securing Maresca as the successor to Pep Guardiola, who recently departed after a decade with the club.

Maresca served as Guardiola’s assistant during the 2022/23 season, a period when City achieved the treble. He was most recently managing Chelsea, and his departure from that club occurred in January with three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract. This contractual situation has led to lawyers from both clubs being involved in the ongoing compensation talks.

Maresca’s anticipated role at City

City is optimistic about reaching an agreement this week to appoint Maresca. While a proposed three-year deal for Maresca is not yet fully finalised, a contract is anticipated to be concluded in the coming days. Discussions are reportedly centring on the timeline of his appointment, the composition of his backroom staff, and other specific details.

Last autumn, Maresca reportedly informed Chelsea that he had attracted interest from City regarding a potential future role as Guardiola’s replacement. This prior communication highlights the long-standing connection between Maresca and the Manchester club.

The appointment of Maresca is widely anticipated, though the official announcement has yet to be made. This delay has put the club’s new era post-Guardiola on pause, a situation that is uncharacteristic for City’s ownership, who typically prefer to finalise key appointments and transfer business early in the summer.

The club’s chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, and CEO, Ferran Soriano, are known for their belief in completing transfer business early to avoid inflated prices later in the window. The current wait for Maresca’s official announcement contrasts with City’s usual swift approach to such matters.

Guardiola’s departure and future plans

Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City was confirmed at the beginning of last week, marking the end of a highly successful tenure that included six Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and various domestic cup successes. Despite narrowly missing out on a final Premier League victory to Mikel Arteta‘s Arsenal in his last season, Guardiola’s legacy at the club is significant.

Regarding his own future, Guardiola has indicated that he has no immediate plans. He expressed a desire to rest and spend time with his children, stating, “I don’t have any absolute plan about my future. I stop to rest and go to recover the time that I missed with my kids.” He also mentioned wanting to do many things he had not done previously, referring to them as “stupid things” without elaborating further.

The transition period at City has seen some changes, with long-time veterans Bernardo Silva and John Stones having departed from the Etihad at the conclusion of the previous season. This means Maresca will face the challenge of integrating new players and implementing his philosophy while building on Guardiola’s existing structures.

Hugo Viana, the club’s director of football, is set to oversee recruitment and sales. The transfer priority list includes a right-back, a central midfielder, and a winger. While Maresca’s primary aim is to connect with current players and impart his philosophy, he is expected to be involved in locating a suitable replacement for Silva, with Elliot Anderson identified as a main target.

Potential outgoings from the club include Nico Gonzalez, Tijani Reijnders, Nathan Ake, James Trafford, Josko Gvardiol, Savinho, and Omar Marmoush. The club’s financial situation is considered healthy, and the no-fee losses of Silva and Stones are not expected to impact their transfer activity this summer. Maresca’s initial games as manager are anticipated during the club’s pre-season tour of the Far East.
