Chelsea Pursues Defensive Reinforcement
Chelsea is currently engaged in discussions with Crystal Palace regarding the potential transfer of defender Maxence Lacroix. The France international is reportedly a key target for Chelsea as they look to strengthen their squad. Reports indicate that Palace is seeking a transfer fee exceeding the £55m paid by Tottenham for Jan Paul van Hecke.
The relationship between Chelsea and Crystal Palace is described as positive, with previous player deals including Trevoh Chalobah and Ben Chilwell. Chelsea aims to acquire a physically imposing centre-back with experience in the Premier League.
Sources suggest that Lacroix has been Chelsea’s primary central defensive target throughout the summer. Personal terms have reportedly been agreed in principle with the player’s representatives. Lacroix is said to be keen on the move to Chelsea, viewing it as a significant step in his career after his time at Selhurst Park.

This transfer would make Rogers the most expensive British player ever, surpassing the £116m paid by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson. Rogers is also set to become Chelsea’s record signing, exceeding the £115m paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023. He is expected to sign a six-year contract with an option for an additional year until 2033.
Chelsea’s recruitment efforts extend beyond central defence. The club has already secured the signing of full-back Marco Palestra. Following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid, Chelsea is also looking to bring in a new left-back. The club had previously warned Rayo Vallecano they would withdraw from negotiations for Pep Chavarria if demands continued to increase, and reports confirm Chelsea is preparing to do so. Instead, Chelsea has made new inquiries for alternative targets, including Real Madrid’s Alvaro Carreras and Fenerbahce defender Archie Brown. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall is also being monitored, though his priority is reportedly a move to Manchester United if he leaves St James’ Park this summer.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Maxence Lacroix’s potential move to Chelsea, stating that the deal is progressing positively. Romano indicated that Chelsea remains in active talks for the defender, who is considered their priority target. Negotiations are ongoing, with the player reportedly eager for the move to Chelsea.
The end of the World Cup is expected to accelerate the transfer process. Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024.
