Late Equaliser Secures Draw for Wales

Wales secured a 1-1 draw against Ghana in an international friendly match, with Lewis Koumas heading in a late equaliser. The goal, scored in time added on, denied Ghana a winning start under their new manager, Carlos Queiroz, as they continue their preparations for the upcoming World Cup.

The match, held at a sparsely populated Cardiff City Stadium, saw Wales control much of the first half. Daniel James was particularly influential, hitting the post and crossbar in quick succession. His header was tipped onto the post by Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, and he later struck a half-volley against the crossbar, with David Brooks creating both opportunities.

Despite their dominance, Wales were unable to convert their chances in the early stages. Ghana’s only significant opportunity before the break came from a misplaced pass by Wales keeper Karl Darlow, who then redeemed himself by saving Jordan Ayew’s subsequent shot.

Ghana’s World Cup Preparations and Managerial Debut

For Ghana, this friendly marked Carlos Queiroz’s first game in charge. The team had experienced five consecutive friendly defeats since qualifying for the World Cup last October. Queiroz expressed optimism despite the draw, stating, “I believe with the next programme of 10 days of training sessions, we will make a lot of progress and be much more consistent.”

Ghana broke the deadlock midway through the second half when substitute Caleb Yirenkyi scored on the rebound. This goal came after Ernest Nuamah forced a save from Darlow, and the follow-up bounced off the post, allowing Yirenkyi to finish. The goal initially gave Ghana the lead, much to the delight of their travelling supporters.

The match was significant for Ghana as they prepare for their World Cup opener against Panama in Toronto. Their World Cup group also includes England and Croatia. Craig Bellamy, the Wales head coach, acknowledged Ghana’s challenging group and their dangerous speed in transition.

Queiroz made a notable decision by including Thomas Partey, now of Villarreal, in his 26-man squad and handing him a start. Partey was booked for a foul on Dan James and later avoided further punishment after tackling David Brooks on the edge of the area. The Swedish referee for the match was Oscar Johnson.

Wales’ Performance and Historical Context

Wales’ equaliser came in the third minute of added time, when Neco Williams delivered a cross from the right, which Koumas headed in for his first international goal. This goal ensured that Wales, who had shown dominance for large periods, avoided a harsh defeat.

This match was only the second time Wales had faced an African opponent, and the first since a 4-0 defeat to Tunisia in a June 1998 friendly. Wales had missed out on World Cup qualification after losing to Bosnia-Herzegovina in March, making this their third game without a victory under Craig Bellamy, though the performance had bright moments.

Bellamy’s men played with a high tempo, limiting Ghana’s possession during the first half. Dan James, who has scored in his last two starts for Wales, showcased his attacking prowess. He is one of only two players, alongside Harry Wilson, to reach double figures for both goals and assists for Wales since his debut in November 2018.

The draw, while disappointing for Ghana to lose a winning position, could serve as a confidence boost after five successive losses. Queiroz emphasised the need for progress, stating, “It’s not time to make big changes, it’s time to tune what they have been doing well and make things better.” Ghana may yet organise another friendly to enhance their preparations in the US before their World Cup opener against Panama.

Ghana is currently without their first-choice centre-back partnership and Mohammed Kudus due to injury. Jerome Opoku, a London-born defender, highlighted the importance of time for the squad to improve, noting the limited time they have spent together. Carlos Queiroz was appointed to succeed Otto Addo in April.
