The World Cup commenced at what FIFA identifies as New York New Jersey Stadium, featuring a match between Brazil and Morocco. For numerous attendees, the journey to the stadium presented considerable logistical challenges.

Those who planned their travel in advance and were prepared to pay approximately $98 for a round-trip ticket generally found New Jersey Transit to be a dependable transportation method. Governor Mikie Sherrill, who utilized the train to attend the match, described it as the most straightforward commuting option.

However, not all fans agreed on the value. Brazil supporter Paulo Vita noted that while the transit was easy, it was also costly. Some fans arrived at Newark Penn Station well before kickoff, allowing them time to visit Newark‘s Ironbound neighborhood, known for its Brazilian community, to eat and socialize.

Travel Challenges and Costs

Fans who opted to drive encountered significant traffic congestion, with many being directed to park at the American Dream Mall. Some drivers experienced gridlock before reaching the stadium, expressing relief upon finally exiting their vehicles.

The decision to drive came with a substantial financial implication, as parking near the stadium reached prices of up to $225. State officials indicated that rail service was the most frequently used mode of transport, with fans boarding trains in New York, Newark, and Secaucus.

Despite the large attendance, trains were not entirely full, suggesting that many local Brazil fans chose to drive. Governor Sherrill commented that the overall experience was well-received by those using public transport.

The region also saw excitement for another major sporting event, with the New York Knicks competing for attention alongside the World Cup buzz. David Vega, a fan from Costa Rica whose team did not qualify, supported Brazil and highlighted the expense, stating, “A lot of money, yeah, but just one game, one World Cup game is good for me.”

Ali Memar, who possessed tickets for multiple matches but missed this one due to a business trip, shared that Brazil had been his favored team since childhood, recalling when Pelé was playing.

Match Outcome and Fan Reactions

The opening match at MetLife Stadium concluded in a 1-1 draw between Brazil and Morocco in a 2026 World Cup group-stage encounter. Morocco took an early lead when Ismael Saibari chipped the ball over Alisson. Vinicius Jr then leveled the score for Brazil with a finish just before half-time.

Both teams appeared to show signs of fatigue late in the game, and the draw leaves Group C in an interesting position. Vinicius Jr acknowledged the team’s need for improvement after the match, stating, “We have got to improve. For certain we got to hold onto the ball and move better.”

Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi commented on the tough match, saying, “It was not easy, we played against a tough team in front of us, a favourite for the tournament. We draw but we are happy for the performance.” He also emphasized the need for continuous improvement and learning from mistakes.

The draw was described as a hard-earned point that both sides could be content with, characteristic of a tense and cagey World Cup opening game. Fans of both teams were observed celebrating together outside the stadium, chanting “ole, ole, ole, ole!” as they departed.

Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil‘s coach, expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance on Brazilian television, noting, “It was difficult, complicated. We were better in the second half. We have to improve.”

The match statistics showed nearly even splits in shots, expected goals, and possession, indicating a tight contest. The result means Brazil avoided a defeat, and they are expected to progress to the knockouts unless unforeseen difficulties arise.
