Yaya Toure Takes Helm at Slovan Bratislava
Yaya Toure, the former Manchester City and Barcelona player, has been named the head coach of Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia. This appointment marks his first head coaching role. The Ivorian football legend signed a three-year agreement with the club, which is recognised as Slovakia’s most successful. He is scheduled to be introduced to the club’s supporters on Monday.
Toure’s new position makes him the first Black coach and the first coach of African descent for Slovan Bratislava. He recently departed from his role as an assistant coach with the Saudi Arabia men’s national team prior to the 2026 World Cup to assume this new leadership position.
Club’s Vision and Toure’s Ambition
Ivan Kmotrik Jr., the CEO of Slovan Bratislava, expressed his satisfaction with Toure’s appointment. He highlighted that the decision was based on Toure’s extensive experience at the highest levels of world football and his strong motivation to establish himself as a coach. Kmotrik Jr. noted that Toure, a winner of the AFCON 2015, made a significant impression during the interview process, leading to confidence in his potential success with the club.
Kmotrik Jr. stated that his objective was to bring in an individual with top-tier experience who is also eager to make a name in coaching. He recalled that Toure’s initial video call left a strong impression, which subsequent candidates found difficult to surpass. The CEO mentioned a shared mindset with Toure regarding success, noting their mutual ambition and high goals for the club.
Toure, who previously served as an assistant to Roberto Mancini, conveyed his eagerness to begin his new role next week. He acknowledged the achievements of his predecessor, Vladimir Weiss, and articulated his intention to build upon that foundation while introducing his own unique approach. He expressed his love for challenges and his excitement to coach a club with a rich history, a modern stadium, and significant ambitions.
The new head coach aims for Slovan Bratislava to play dominant football, secure victories, and control matches to entertain the fans. He is keen to get to know the players personally and has already begun studying the team in detail. Toure emphasised that the most crucial aspect will be observing the players’ reactions during training sessions.
Past Experience and Future Objectives
Toure’s coaching journey includes various roles before this head coaching opportunity. He spent time as an academy coach with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, where he coached the under-16s starting in August 2022. He also held an assistant role at Belgian club Standard Liege in 2023 and joined the Saudi Arabian coaching setup under Mancini in October of the same year.
As a player, Toure had a distinguished career, spending eight seasons with Manchester City between 2010 and 2018. During this period, he won three Premier League titles, two League Cups, and one FA Cup. Before his time at Manchester City, he played for Barcelona from 2007 to 2010, where he secured three La Liga titles and the Champions League in 2009. His playing career concluded after leaving Chinese side Qingdao at the beginning of 2020.
Slovan Bratislava won their 24th Slovak First Football League title last season, solidifying their status as the most successful club in Slovakia. The club participated in the Champions League for the second time in their history during the 2024-25 campaign. Toure’s primary objectives include guiding Slovan Bratislava to qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League group stage and maintaining their domestic dominance, which includes eight consecutive Slovak League titles.
Toure expressed his anticipation for Monday, when he will officially commence his duties.
