Junior Boks’ Impressive Opening
The Junior Springboks began their campaign in the U20 International Series with a commanding 97-0 victory over Chile. This match, held in Cape Town, showcased the team’s offensive prowess, with standout performances from players like Lindsey Jansen and Risima Khosa, who each scored three tries. Flyhalf Vusi Moyo contributed significantly by converting eleven tries during the match.
Head coach Kevin Foote expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting their ability to stick to the game plan and maintain composure throughout the match. He emphasized the importance of maturity and teamwork, especially since the squad had only come together shortly before the game.
Focus on Player Development
Foote highlighted the role of the broader rugby system in developing talent, crediting schools, provincial unions, and SA Rugby for their contributions. He remarked on the invaluable experience gained by players who had returned from injuries, such as Pieter van der Merwe, and the positive impact their leadership had on the team.
As the Junior Boks prepare to face Fiji in their next match, Foote indicated that the coaching staff would continue to rotate the squad. This approach aims to assess depth in key positions while providing valuable game time to players who may not have featured prominently in the recent U20 Rugby Championship.
Looking Ahead to the Fiji Match
Foote acknowledged that the upcoming match against Fiji would present different challenges. He noted that while Chile brought a strong effort, Fiji and Georgia would test the team in unique ways. The coach’s strategy includes balancing the immediate needs of the team with long-term development goals as they build towards the Junior World Championship.
Regular captain Riley Norton and utility back Zekhethelo Siyaya were unavailable for the initial matches due to their inclusion in the Springbok alignment camp. Additionally, midfielder Markus Muller and Bulls wing Cheswill Jooste were not considered for selection due to injuries. This situation has opened opportunities for other players to step up and demonstrate their capabilities.
Upcoming Fixtures
The next match for the Junior Boks is scheduled for Tuesday at Wynberg Boys’ High School, where they will face Fiji at 3 PM. The series also includes a match between Chile and Georgia at 1 PM. Following this, the Junior Boks will play Georgia at Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday.
Foote’s emphasis on player development and team cohesion is expected to be crucial as the Junior Boks continue their journey in the series. With a strong start against Chile, the team aims to build on their success and further refine their strategies against Fiji and Georgia.
