Former Ghana striker Prince Tagoe has voiced concerns regarding the suitability of Carlos Queiroz as head coach for the Black Stars. Tagoe believes that the Portuguese coach’s tactical methods do not align with the traditional football philosophy of the nation.
Queiroz was appointed on a short-term contract following the departure of Otto Addo before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under his leadership, Ghana advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament, a feat not achieved since 2010. The team’s campaign concluded in the Round of 32 after a defeat to Colombia.
Queiroz’s tenure and public perception
Despite the elimination, Ghana’s overall performance at the World Cup garnered positive remarks from President John Dramani Mahama. The President suggested that authorities should encourage the coach to remain in his role to build upon the progress made. President Mahama described Ghana’s World Cup showing as exceeding expectations during an inspection of the Ho Sports Stadium.
However, Tagoe, who played for Ghana in the 2010 World Cup, stated that retaining the former Real Madrid manager would be an incorrect decision. He argued that Queiroz’s tactical approach, which he perceives as defensive, does not suit the identity of Ghanaian football. “Keeping coach Carlos Queiroz is a waste of time. I am not okay with his tactics. Ghana football is not about defending,” Tagoe told Adom TV, adding, “I don’t think he will take us far.”
The debate surrounding Queiroz’s future comes as Ghana prepares for its next significant challenge: qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars have been drawn into Group C, alongside Ivory Coast, Gambia, and Somalia, as they aim to participate in Africa’s premier football tournament after missing the 2025 edition.
Contract discussions and salary details
Kofi Adams, Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, clarified the financial details of Queiroz’s contract, stating that the coach earns $80,000 per month, correcting earlier reports of a higher figure. Queiroz signed a short-term agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after his appointment in March.
The financial terms of this agreement were not initially public, leading to speculation about his compensation. In an interview, Kofi Adams confirmed the coach’s salary. Despite the team’s elimination from the World Cup, Queiroz’s performance has reportedly impressed both the GFA and the Ministry of Sports.
Reports indicate that the Portuguese coach is expected to be offered a two-year contract extension to continue leading the Black Stars. Ghana’s focus is now firmly on the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with their campaign in Group C set to commence in September.
Minister Adams expressed his support for a two-year contract for Queiroz, noting that discussions regarding the coach’s future are in advanced stages. He mentioned that while he is not the final decision-maker, feedback from stakeholders largely supports Queiroz remaining in charge. Adams indicated that current discussions are centered on the terms of a new agreement.
Adams also reflected on the World Cup campaign, stating that expectations were modest due to Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON. He described the team’s performance at the World Cup as a “fair success,” surpassing many initial expectations.
Queiroz’s current contract is set to expire this month. Adams confirmed that while negotiations are ongoing and financial details are not yet public, he would support a two-year deal to provide continuity for the national team through the next AFCON campaign.
The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September.
