Verstappen extends Red Bull deal to 2030Verstappen extends Red Bull deal to 2030

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has signed a new contract with Red Bull, committing his future to the team until the end of 2030. This agreement aims to conclude discussions about the Dutch driver’s future, as he had been linked with potential moves to teams such as Mercedes or McLaren.

Verstappen, 28, was previously under contract until the end of 2028. However, his prior agreement reportedly contained clauses that would have allowed him to depart at the conclusion of the current Formula 1 season if he had chosen to do so. The announcement coincides with his final home race this weekend before the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort is removed from the calendar.

Commitment to the Team

Verstappen expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating, “We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.” He emphasized that achieving this remains the ultimate goal for the team. “I have always said it: the team is like a second family for me and I feel very at home,” Verstappen added, reflecting on his journey with Red Bull.

He recalled joining the team with aspirations of winning races and highlighted the achievements since then, including many incredible moments and four World Championships. “To continue this journey with the same team that I have been with my whole career is really special and something I have always wanted to do,” he affirmed.

The extension comes despite a challenging start to the season for Red Bull under new car and engine regulations. Verstappen’s best results this season have been two second-place finishes in the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix. This follows a close competition last season where he finished within two points of McLaren’s Lando Norris for the world title, after overcoming a deficit of more than 100 points in the second half of the season.

Despite his occasional frustrations regarding the car’s performance and the new regulations, Verstappen has chosen to remain with Red Bull. This decision was made even as his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is set to join McLaren by 2028.

Vision for the Future

Verstappen’s renewal statement also included praise for team principal Laurent Mekies, who assumed the role last July after Christian Horner‘s departure. “Getting to work with Laurent now for over a year has also been great, I see a clear vision he has for the team,” Verstappen commented.

He further noted the collective belief within the team’s base in Milton Keynes: “Everyone [at Red Bull’s base] in Milton Keynes believes in what we are building and I am looking forward to the next chapter, fighting for more victories and competing for championships as we continue to shape the future of this team.”

Mekies also shared his perspective on the contract extension, calling it “fantastic news” to retain “the best driver on the grid.” He highlighted the unique partnership between Verstappen and the team, stating, “Very few partnerships in sport achieve what Max and this team have.” Mekies described Verstappen as embodying Red Bull Racing’s core values: “uncompromising competitiveness, relentless determination and the courage to challenge convention.”

Mekies emphasized Verstappen’s transformative impact on the team and its motorsport history, acknowledging his fundamental role in their shared achievements. He attributed the decision to continue their journey to the trust built over many years and Verstappen’s confidence in the team’s people, culture, and vision. “Forged through championship-winning success, intense battles and challenging moments alike, this relationship has only grown stronger – making it one of Formula 1’s greatest success stories. But we are not done yet. There are more races to win, more milestones to achieve and more history to write,” Mekies concluded.

Verstappen began his F1 career with Toro Rosso, Red Bull’s junior team, in 2015. He was promoted to the senior team after four races into his second season in 2016, immediately securing his first victory. Since then, he has accumulated 71 Grand Prix wins alongside his four world titles, placing him third in all-time F1 history for race victories, behind Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.

While the deal extends until 2030, standard mechanisms in F1 driver contracts suggest that Verstappen could still have options to leave if performance expectations are not met. The specific details of these clauses are not publicly known, as teams typically do not comment on contractual intricacies. This commitment from Verstappen is seen as a significant boost for Red Bull, especially after a period where he explored options with other teams and publicly questioned the direction of the sport, particularly regarding the new engine regulations.

His renewed commitment, described as a demonstration of faith, comes in a season where he has openly expressed dissatisfaction with his car’s performance. The focus of the driver market now shifts to other drivers, such as Fernando Alonso, and whether the Aston Martin veteran will extend his lengthy career in F1.
