Midfield Reinforcement Nears Completion

Manchester United is reportedly nearing a full agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for the transfer of midfielder Carlos Baleba. This move is expected to complete the club’s midfield restructuring, following the earlier signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

The deal for Baleba is anticipated to exceed £60m, with a five-year contract prepared for the Cameroon international. While the final fee and structure are still being finalised, Baleba is understood to be preparing for travel to Manchester for a medical examination.

This pursuit of Baleba marks a strategic shift for Manchester United, which has seen a more discreet approach to transfers this summer. The club previously played down interest in Baleba, despite having made an inquiry about him a year ago when his asking price was reportedly in excess of £100m.

Baleba’s Role and Injury Status

Carlos Baleba, 22, is currently recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained during pre-season. This injury is not expected to sideline him for an extended period, with reports suggesting he could return in a couple of weeks.

Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 and has made 112 appearances for the club. Last season, he featured 35 times, with a period of absence due to his participation with Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations.

His potential addition is seen as crucial for Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, who has been seeking a player with strong defensive capabilities and athleticism. Baleba’s ability to cover ground quickly and carry the ball through midfield would add dynamism to the squad.

The midfielder’s form reportedly dipped last season, making his potential transfer a calculated risk for Manchester United. However, his standout athleticism and ability to win back possession in deeper areas are considered valuable assets for the team’s tactical approach.

Midfield Dynamics and Future Plans

With the impending arrival of Carlos Baleba, Manchester United’s midfield is set to gain a new balance. Andrey Santos has demonstrated strong defensive screening in pre-season, while Youri Tielemans offers composure, an excellent passing range, and a determination to increase his goal contributions.

The club’s recruitment department has focused on reshaping the midfield following the departure of Casemiro, whose contract expired on June 30. Ruben Amorim’s exit also saw Bruno Fernandes move into a more advanced role, impacting the midfield setup.

Kobbie Mainoo, who signed a new deal until 2031, is another experienced midfielder who played a prominent part last season. However, he faces increased competition for minutes with the new signings. Mason Mount is also an option, with his versatility appealing to the manager, though he is currently recovering from a foot injury.

The focus on acquiring players with Premier League experience, such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha last season, suggests a strategy to minimise the risk of players failing to adapt. Manchester United appears willing to pay a premium for players from other Premier League clubs, believing the extra cost is justified by the reduced risk.

Despite the significant investment in midfield, Michael Carrick has indicated that the club still needs more additions. There is an acknowledged need for a new left-back, though the specific target for this position has not yet been identified.

The club’s recruitment plans are now managed with a tighter degree of control, contrasting with past transfer sagas. The Santos deal was concluded within a week, and the Tielemans transfer was even quicker, indicating a more streamlined process.

The potential acquisition of Carlos Baleba is expected to be concluded swiftly, adding a crucial component to Manchester United’s midfield ahead of the upcoming season.
