Premier League Spending Trends

The Premier League‘s gross purchases among its 20 clubs are approaching the £2.2 billion mark, with the total net spend for transfers exceeding £850 million. These figures are from Transfermarkt. Notably, recently promoted clubs Ipswich Town and Coventry City have each spent over £100 million net. When including Hull City, the three newly promoted sides have accumulated a significant amount in gross combined fees for new players. This amount is less than what Sunderland, Burnley, and Leeds United spent a year prior, with two weeks remaining in the transfer window.

Ipswich‘s recruitment of Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara from Strasbourg pushed their spending past the £150 million mark. This marks only the second instance of a club surpassing this barrier in the summer following promotion. Sunderland achieved this last year. Coventry‘s signing of Taiwo Awoniyi also saw their team’s spending exceed £100 million. This includes permanent moves for loanees Carl Rushworth and Frank Onyeka, and the return of Gustavo Hamer after a three-season spell with Sheffield United.

In contrast, some of the league’s wealthier clubs show less activity. Liverpool has spent £91 million, with over half committed in February for Jeremy Jacquet. The departures of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate, and Andy Robertson have reduced their wage bill. Manchester United‘s net outlay is £44 million, a decrease following substantial past spending. Within the first two years of Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquiring a stake in the club, a significant amount was spent on new players. United‘s net spend in 2025-26 reached a seven-year low.

Chelsea continues to lead in net transfer spend. Arsenal follows Coventry in spending. The champions are projected to have achieved English record revenues last season and were the division’s largest net spenders a year ago. The acquisition of Bruno Guimaraes has again propelled their spending into nine figures. Sunderland is the only Premier League club yet to make a payment, though this is expected to change with the upcoming signing of Dayann Methalie from Toulouse. Five clubs have received more than they have spent, including Newcastle United, who have recouped over £200 million from sales. Aston Villa‘s sales are also near that figure. The current spending is still some way from matching last year’s record of £3.1 billion.

Key Player Movements and Negotiations

Manchester United is in contract discussions with Bruno Fernandes, who has received a proposal from Galatasaray. The Turkish club offered a salary of €20 million annually. Fernandes reportedly wishes to remain at United, where his current terms, signed in August 2024, are set to run until 2027 with an option for an additional 12 months. United is not open to selling Fernandes and states no contact has been received from other clubs regarding the Portugal international. Last year, Fernandes attracted significant interest from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

The situation with Cody Gakpo has not progressed significantly. Tottenham remains interested and has engaged with the player’s representatives, but formal negotiations between clubs have not occurred. Liverpool maintains that the Dutch attacking midfielder, who has four years remaining on his contract, is not for sale. Aston Villa has resumed talks to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich. Villa is pursuing a season-long loan with an option to buy, despite interest from Newcastle United. Bayern reportedly sought a €30 million fee, either as a permanent transfer or as part of a loan option.

Aston Villa is aware of long-standing interest from Al Hilal in Ollie Watkins. Chelsea‘s sporting directors have enlisted agent Jorge Mendes to facilitate an exit for midfielder Enzo Fernández, with Manchester City reportedly prepared to make a significant effort to secure a deal. However, Man City has ended its pursuit of Chelsea winger Pedro Neto due to the asking price. Al Hilal is also reportedly interested in a deal for Neto. Liverpool has agreed to personal terms with both Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, who are awaiting a final decision from Paris Saint-Germain regarding their futures.

While Liverpool has the option to match any offer Bayer Leverkusen receives for center-back Jarell Quansah, a target for Arsenal, the Reds currently do not intend to do so. Arsenal believes several Premier League clubs are now poised to test their resolve over young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri after he was not included in the squad for the Community Shield victory. Tottenham Hotspur has accepted an offer from Juventus to sign goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on loan, with an option to make the move permanent. Richarlison is open to leaving Tottenham for Everton, who made an initial offer to reunite with the Brazilian striker.

Arsenal is seeking a significant amount for winger Gabriel Martinelli, amid interest from Roma. Napoli is also in talks to sign Martinelli, who will not be permitted to leave unless Arsenal finds a replacement. Al Hilal is looking to offload striker Karim Benzema and has identified Aston Villa‘s Ollie Watkins as a preferred replacement. Both Aston Villa and Newcastle United have expressed interest in signing AC Milan forward Christopher Nkunku. Jules Koundé plans discussions with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick to clarify his role for the upcoming season, with Arsenal reportedly monitoring the situation.

Moving in the opposite direction, Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres has been identified as a potential replacement for Ferran Torres at Barcelona. Meanwhile, Barcelona remains in contact with representatives of United forward Marcus Rashford as they consider a move to bring him to Camp Nou. Rodri ended negotiations with Real Madrid after perceiving concerns from Los Blancos regarding his playing style’s compatibility with the squad. The lack of contact from manager José Mourinho also led him to believe a move to Barcelona was more suitable. Mourinho has not requested a move for Arsenal‘s Martín Zubimendi as an alternative to Rodri.

Mourinho declined the opportunity to bring Como center-back Jacobo Ramón and Stuttgart midfielder Chema Andrés back to Real Madrid this summer, instead asking club officials to track the two youngsters for potential moves in 2027. Liverpool could be active in the transfer market before their campaign begins away at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. Andoni Iraola‘s side has been linked with a move for PSG winger Bradley Barcola, who was absent from PSG‘s loss to Lens. Ibrahim Mbaye, also left out of the PSG match, has been linked with an exit.

Lewis Hall has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, with talks potentially accelerating after the Red Devils‘ defensive struggles over the weekend. However, Newcastle previously rejected an approach and is determined not to sell, having already seen Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes depart this summer. United has also shown interest in center-back Kim Min-jae, but convincing the South Korean could be challenging, as he reportedly wishes to remain at Bayern Munich. Reports indicate that Jarell Quansah could return to England, with Arsenal in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen, though the German club is hesitant to sell. Arsenal is also reportedly pursuing Victor Osimhen despite a warning from Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek.
