Arsenal’s strong start to the season
Arsenal began their season with a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Ødegaard secured the win for the Gunners. This result marked Arsenal’s second trophy in four months.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, expressed surprise at his team’s performance, describing it as “extremely impressive.” In contrast, new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who took over from Pep Guardiola, downplayed the significance of the defeat, stating, “It’s a defeat that hurts us, but it’s just the beginning.” The match saw Arsenal take the lead early, with Calafiori scoring after 23 seconds. Havertz then doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute, and Ødegaard added a third goal three minutes into the second half.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown noted the significant difference between the two teams, observing that “The gap was really quite stunning.” He added that Arsenal appeared to play freely, while Manchester City seemed “lifeless.” Ally McCoist, a former Scotland striker, described Manchester City’s performance as “a bit of a schooling,” acknowledging that while it was early in the season, it was “concerning” for the club.
Underlying statistics and player performances
The statistics from the match highlighted Arsenal’s control, with the Gunners creating 2.19 expected goals (xG) compared to Manchester City’s 0.77. Notably, none of Arsenal’s xG came from set-pieces. This metric, which assesses the likelihood of chances resulting in goals, showed Arsenal finishing with nearly three times the xG total of Manchester City.
This victory was Arsenal’s biggest win to nil against Manchester City since August 2014, when they also secured a 3-0 victory in the Community Shield. For Manchester City, it was their heaviest defeat to nil against an English side since a 4-0 loss in November 2024 against Tottenham.

Christos Tzolis, a new signing for Arsenal, was a standout performer, playing the entire match and providing two assists. He was involved in all three of Arsenal’s goals. Bruno Guimarães, another new addition, also made his debut for Arsenal, wearing the number 39 shirt. On the Manchester City side, Elliot Anderson made his first appearance since the World Cup, but his performance was described as overwhelmed.
Squad changes and future outlook
Both clubs have seen significant activity in the summer transfer window. Manchester City secured a deal for England midfielder Elliot Anderson for £116m. However, they have also seen key players depart, with Bernardo Silva and John Stones leaving on free transfers, and Manuel Akanji, Nathan Aké, and James Trafford being sold for substantial fees. Rodri, a World Cup winner, is also reportedly heading to Barcelona in a £65m deal, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez considered a potential replacement.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have brought in Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, and made Piero Hincapie’s loan move permanent. They have sold fringe players Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, and Christian Norgaard. Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta noted that the team is looking to strengthen certain areas, particularly in defence, due to injuries.

The stability in management at Arsenal, with Arteta continuing in his role, contrasts with several other top clubs, including Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea, who have new managers this summer. Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard stated, “We showed our level today. We’re showed we’re ready. We’re serious and we want to do it again.”
