Somerset, currently leading the Rothesay County Championship, faced difficulties on the opening day of their match against Yorkshire at Headingley. The day was marked by a strong performance from bowlers, with Yorkshire ultimately bowling out Somerset for 68 for five from 28 overs by the close of play. The match, a penultimate-round fixture, saw Yorkshire win the toss and elect to bat first. Despite a rain-shortened morning, Yorkshire managed to post a total of 212 runs. Somerset‘s bowling attack, led by captain Lewis Gregory and overseas seamer Migael Pretorius, initially made inroads. Both bowlers claimed three wickets each. Yorkshire’s Batting and Recovery
Yorkshire‘s innings saw a challenging start, with openers Adam Lyth and Will Luxton caught in the slips by Lewis Gregory for 11 and 22 runs respectively. Sam Whiteman was then bowled by Jake Ball, and Matthew Revis was run out by Josh Thomas. James Wharton was also bowled by Gregory, leaving Yorkshire at 85 for five.
The partnership between Jonny Bairstow and George Hill was vital for Yorkshire‘s recovery. They shared an 83-run stand for the sixth wicket during the afternoon session. Bairstow reached his half-century off 74 balls, guiding Yorkshire to 160 for five at one point. Hill contributed 45 runs before being caught behind off Migael Pretorius. Bairstow continued to anchor the innings, taking the hosts past the 200-run mark. He was eventually caught at long-off against Migael Pretorius for 79. Kuldeep Yadav was caught behind off Jake Ball, and Ben Cliff was caught at short mid-wicket off Ball, wrapping up Yorkshire‘s innings at 212.
Somerset’s Difficult Reply
In response, Somerset faced immediate pressure from Yorkshire‘s new-ball bowlers. Ben Coad and Ben Cliff opened the bowling for Yorkshire. Ben Coad got Tom Lammonby caught at first slip by George Hill, leaving Somerset at 11 for one in the fifth over. Shortly after, Ben Cliff trapped Josh Thomas lbw, and Somerset were 11 for two in the sixth over.
The difficulties continued for Somerset as Ben Cliff bowled Archie Vaughan and then had Tom Abell caught behind on the next ball, reducing Somerset to 24 for four. Henry Nicholls was later removed by Matthew Revis, aided by a one-handed catch from George Hill at first slip, bringing the score to 55 for five.
James Rew remained unbeaten on 17 runs at the close of play, with Craig Overton on seven. Somerset, who entered this fixture with a slender advantage in the title race, are separated by just five points from Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire in one of the closest title battles in recent memory.
