Arsenal teenager Max Dowman delivered a standout performance, scoring two goals in the Carabao Cup 4-2 victory against Ipswich Town. Despite his impressive display, manager Mikel Arteta emphasized the need for caution in developing the young player.
Dowman, who is 16 years old, featured 13 times last season but had primarily been a substitute this campaign until this match. His two goals at Portman Road have strengthened his case for more playing time in the Premier League.
Arteta’s cautious approach to development
Arteta highlighted the importance of a careful approach to Dowman’s progression. He stated that the club does not wish to hinder his development but must ensure he receives the right support and opportunities. Arteta described Dowman as an “unbelievable player” with a strong character, noting his love for playing on significant stages.
Dowman’s first goal was a solo effort where he navigated through defenders before scoring. His second goal showcased his composure, as he placed the ball into the bottom corner. Arteta praised his unpredictability and fluid style of play.
Dowman is only the second 16-year-old to score two goals in a single game for a Premier League side across all competitions. The only other player to achieve this was Wayne Rooney for Everton against Wrexham in 2002, also in the League Cup.
Arteta acknowledged the difficulty of managing the hype surrounding Dowman, particularly given his age in the demanding Premier League. He stressed the need to ensure Dowman is always in the appropriate environment with proper preparation whenever he is given playing opportunities.
Dowman’s previous season and future prospects
Last season, Dowman made a significant breakthrough, setting several records. He became the youngest player ever in the Champions League at 15 years old, Arsenal’s youngest ever starter, and the Premier League’s youngest starter, goalscorer, and title winner. In 13 appearances across all competitions, he scored once, a goal against Everton that secured a win during the title race and was voted Arsenal’s goal of the season.
During this period, Dowman was also studying for school exams. He received his GCSEs from Brentwood School in the summer before focusing entirely on his football career.
Jamie Redknapp, a pundit, described Dowman as a “wonderful player” who has the potential to achieve much in the sport. He emphasized the importance of giving him time and commended Arsenal’s handling of his development.
Breaking into Arsenal’s first team presents a challenge for Dowman, especially with the team’s current strong form, having won all seven games this season across four competitions. Dowman was an unused substitute in four of these games and not involved in two others before playing the entire 90 minutes against Ipswich Town.
The club’s attacking lineup in league games has consistently featured Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz. However, Dowman, who was relied upon in crucial moments during last season’s title race, will be aiming for a more prominent role.
Team-mate Mikel Merino praised Dowman as an “unbelievable talent” who could become a future star if he continues to learn. Merino noted that at 16 years old, Dowman requires significant coaching, particularly in tactics, but is always eager to learn.
Some observers consider Dowman to be among the best 16-year-olds globally, with discussions even suggesting his potential inclusion in England’s Euro 2028 plans. There was also debate earlier this year about his possible involvement in the World Cup.
Former England defender Conor Coady referred to Dowman as a “real superstar,” stressing that a 16-year-old should not be performing at such a high level. Coady believes Arteta is the ideal manager to oversee Dowman’s development, ensuring he is properly looked after.
The three youngest players to score in the League Cup for a Premier League side have all done so for Arsenal: Cesc Fabregas (16 years 212 days against Wolves in 2003), Dowman (16 years 258 days against Ipswich), and Jack Wilshere (16 years 266 days against Sheffield United in 2008).
