Alex Eala’s Impact on Filipino Tennis

Alex Eala has emerged as a significant figure in the world of tennis, drawing considerable attention for her talent and the fervent support of her Filipino fanbase. Her rise has led to comparisons with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao in terms of national impact. Eala, who is 21, has achieved a world ranking of No 18, marking the highest ranking ever for a South-East Asian female tennis player.

Her success extends to winning her maiden WTA 500 title at the Mubadala DC Open, a historic moment that saw Filipino flags and supporters present at matches globally. This achievement followed her second WTA 125 singles title at Birmingham in June. The impact of Eala’s career is evident in events such as the first-ever Philippine Women’s Open held in Manila, an event that some suggest might not have occurred without her breakthrough.

Eala is also anticipated to represent her country at this year’s Asian Games, where she is considered a favourite for a gold medal. Her influence is such that a homecoming match against Janice Tjen of Indonesia in Bulacan in December is expected to attract a sell-out crowd of 55,000 spectators.

Fan Support and Professional Perspective

Former world number four Johanna Konta has shared her observations on Eala and her growing fanbase, describing the support as ‘really refreshing’. Konta, working for Eurosport at the US Open, noted that Eala’s fans appear to support her regardless of match outcomes, expressing happiness simply that she is competing. This type of following, according to Konta, feels less demanding compared to other fan bases.

Konta also discussed how Eala manages the expectations from her Filipino supporters. She noted that Eala projects an image of embracing her role, showing dedication by fighting hard and seeking solutions on the court. Eala also appears to be generous with her time, understanding her role in promoting tennis in her home country.

Coco Gauff, the world No 4, has also praised Eala’s impact, likening her popularity to that of Manny Pacquiao. Gauff highlighted that Eala is breaking barriers, especially for female players from the Philippines, in a way similar to Pacquiao’s influence on his country. Gauff acknowledged her own fortune in being from the US, where many icons have already paved the way for athletes.

Upcoming Matches and Head-to-Head Records

Eala’s journey at the US Open included an anticipated third-round match against Iva Jovic. Konta provided insights into this match, noting that Eala and Jovic have previously shared the court at Flushing Meadows during fan week, even inviting their fathers to the court, creating memorable experiences.

Off the court, the two young players are reported to get along well and are considered important figures in the new generation of tennis. However, in terms of their head-to-head record, Jovic holds a 2-0 advantage over Eala, with both matches occurring this year. These previous encounters include a 6-4, 6-2 victory for Jovic at the French Open 1R and another 6-2, 6-2 win at the Queen’s Club 2R. Both matches were played on different surfaces: one on clay and one on grass, with no previous hard-court encounters between them.

The third-round clash between Eala and Jovic at the US Open was scheduled as the first match on Arthur Ashe Stadium for the evening session, not starting before 7pm EDT or 7am PHT.

Despite not having taken a set off Jovic in their previous meetings, Eala was expected to enter the match with confidence. The match was also notable for the potential division of fan support, with Jovic being American and Eala bringing her substantial fanbase, a dynamic Konta expressed particular interest in observing.
