Neville‘s optimism stems from the direction the club is heading under Alonso, stating he is “as positive as I have been for three four five years about Chelsea.” He acknowledged that while the team was not expected to win against Arsenal, their performance in the match offered reasons for confidence. Alonso himself recognised the need to address the team’s defensive issues. He stated that his priority is to win games, which typically involves conceding fewer goals. The manager admitted that improving defensive solidity, becoming tighter, more clinical, and more balanced, will require time. He only took on the managerial role in May, indicating that the team is still in the early stages of development under his leadership.
The match saw Morgan Rogers score for Chelsea within the opening 77 seconds, putting them ahead. However, Kai Havertz equalised for Arsenal in the first half, and Martin Odegaard secured the winning goal early in the second period. Despite the loss, Chelsea continued to press for an equaliser, with Estevao Willian notably testing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
Rogers reflected on the defeat, stating that while the team was disappointed, the loss does not alter their belief in the team’s trajectory. He highlighted that it was only the fourth game under Alonso, and that the team knew there was work to be done even after their initial three victories.
