Manchester United had led twice during the match, but Maitland-Niles’s goal, a long-range effort, salvaged a point for Everton on his debut. The match saw Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko score for Manchester United. Mbeumo’s goal came 61 seconds after the restart, while Sesko headed Manchester United ahead for the second time in the 88th minute. Moyes praises squad’s resilience
Everton manager David Moyes praised his team’s resilience, especially after a challenging week following the transfer deadline. Moyes noted that despite having a smaller squad, his players showed commitment. He highlighted the quality of the goals scored by both Maitland-Niles and George, particularly Maitland-Niles’s strike from 25 yards, which he described as a “brilliant goal, brilliant technique.”
Maitland-Niles, a deadline-day signing, was introduced in the 77th minute and made an immediate impact. His equaliser, timed at 95:11, was the latest home goal scored at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. He is the first player to score on his Everton debut since Richarlison in August 2018. Moyes acknowledged that while the team is still getting to know Maitland-Niles and his role, it was a great start for him.
Moyes also addressed the team’s reduced strike-force, now relying on Thierno Barry after what was described as a “disastrous” transfer window. Despite this, Moyes insisted there were “no excuses” from his team. He believes that sometimes having fewer players means everyone must be ready and find ways to make it work, especially with a demanding schedule of three games a week.
Carrick expresses disappointment
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick expressed his disappointment over letting the lead slip twice. He stated that it “hurts” to come away with only a point after being in a strong position. Carrick acknowledged that while his team did many good things and showed strong attacking play, they could have managed the game better in certain moments.
Carrick’s assessment of his side’s start to the season was that it was “not that bad,” despite the frustration of the draw. He received support for this view from Wayne Rooney, who analysed the game and noted a lot more control in Manchester United’s performance. Rooney described Everton’s goals as “two great strikes” and felt there was encouragement for United, despite the disappointment of not winning.
Carrick admitted that while they took a point, it felt like a defeat given the effort put in to get into winning positions. He stated that the team was “bitterly disappointed” and felt they should have secured more points from the match. The draw leaves Manchester United reflecting on the missed opportunity to secure an away victory.
