Premier League Clubs Face Varied Champions League Draws
The 36 clubs participating in the Champions League league phase now know their opponents for the upcoming season. The draw, which took place in Monaco on Thursday, August 27, 2026, has set the stage for a competitive campaign, with some teams receiving more challenging fixtures than others.
Manchester City and Aston Villa appear to have received some of the toughest assignments among Premier League clubs. City, beginning their Champions League campaign without Pep Guardiola for the first time in 11 years, will navigate a difficult schedule under his replacement, Enzo Maresca. Their opponents have an average rating of 91.7, placing them among the five teams with the most challenging draws overall. City will face two European giants from pot one, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, and will also contend with Napoli, ranked 34th globally, from pot three.
Aston Villa also drew Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain from pot one. While they have positive memories from a previous encounter with the French champions at Villa Park, where they won the second leg of their quarter-finals 3-2, Paris Saint-Germain ultimately eliminated them 5-4 on aggregate in 2024-25. Villa’s squad has seen significant changes this summer, and they were also drawn against Club Brugge and Borussia Dortmund, considered the toughest possible opponents from pot two. Despite more forgiving opponents from the lower pots, manager Unai Emery will need to employ his European expertise for the team to make a deep run in the competition.
Arsenal and Liverpool Receive Favourable Draws
In contrast, Liverpool has been handed the easiest draw among Premier League clubs, with their eight opponents having an average rating of 90.0. This places their fixture list as the ninth-kindest overall. Liverpool will play Atlético Madrid and Inter, both considered the easiest pot-one opponents available to Premier League teams, and have avoided any major European powerhouses.
Arsenal also received a relatively favourable draw, despite facing challenging pot-one fixtures against Bayern Munich (away) and Real Madrid (home). They also drew Borussia Dortmund, the highest-ranked team in pot two. However, beyond these matches, Arsenal’s schedule appears less daunting, as they drew Sabah and Slovan Bratislava, the two lowest-ranked teams in the competition, from pot four. Sabah is ranked 170th globally, and Slovan Bratislava is 224th.
Manchester United, returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2023-24, faces a draw that is on the more difficult side, though not disastrous. They will play Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid from pot one, and Como, the most challenging opponent from pot four. Fixtures against Sporting CP, ranked 21st, and Roma, 22nd, are also expected to be highly competitive. United also drew RB Leipzig (38th) and Villarreal (43rd) from pot three.
Tournament Structure and Key Dates
The league phase of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League will feature 36 teams, each playing eight opponents. Teams cannot face opponents from the same association and could be drawn against a maximum of two sides from the same country. The first round of games is scheduled for September 8-10, 2026. Subsequent matchdays are set for October 13-14, October 20-21, November 3-4, November 24-25, December 8-9, January 19-20, and January 27, 2027.
The top eight teams in the final standings will advance directly to the round of 16 in March. Teams ranked ninth to 24th will enter knockout play-offs in February to determine the remaining eight teams for the round of 16. Teams finishing 25th to 36th will be eliminated from the competition. The knockout phase play-offs are scheduled for February 16/17 and 23/24, with the round of 16 taking place on March 9/10 and 16/17, 2027.
Four teams will make their debut in this Champions League edition: Como from Italy, LASK of Austria, Viking from Norway, and Azerbaijani champions Sabah. Additionally, this season marks the first time an African coach, former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, will guide a team into the main draw, having led Slovan Bratislava through their qualifying play-off.
The quarter-finals are slated for April 6/7 and 13/14, followed by the semi-finals on April 27/28 and May 4/5. The final is scheduled for June 5, 2027, at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
Stuttgart received the easiest draw of any team, with their opponents having an average rating of 88.9. Inter also had a particularly favourable outcome, receiving the second-easiest set of fixtures with an average opponent rating of 89.5. Inter, who finished as runners-up in 2024-25, experienced a surprise exit at the hands of Bodø/Glimt in the playoff stage last season. Given their relatively easy schedule, they will aim to avoid the playoff stage entirely and qualify directly for the last 16.
Beyond the Premier League clubs, Sabah and Slavia Prague emerged with the hardest and third-hardest fixture lists, respectively, according to Opta power rankings. French club Lens also received a particularly difficult draw, with their opponents’ average rating at 92.1, while Atlético Madrid’s opponents had an average rating of 92.0.
