Alvarez’s Future at Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid has given forward Julian Alvarez until Sunday to decide his future. The club has indicated that he should either remain with them or consider a move to Arsenal. This comes after Atletico made it clear they would not negotiate with Barcelona, which is reportedly Alvarez’s preferred destination. The situation has left Alvarez feeling “struggling” and “confused,” and he has not yet shown significant interest in joining the Premier League champions.
Miguel Angel Gil Marin, Atletico’s CEO, expressed regret over the situation, stating that Alvarez was misled and confused. Marin described Alvarez as a great person, professional, and footballer who is currently experiencing a difficult period both personally and professionally. Despite the ongoing uncertainty, Atletico manager Diego Simeone has confirmed that Alvarez will not participate in the upcoming match against Sevilla this weekend, having missed the last three training sessions.
Arsenal’s Stance and Manager’s Comments
From Arsenal’s perspective, there has been no change in their approach. The club reportedly believes it is unlikely Alvarez will join them unless he demonstrates considerable interest in being part of manager Mikel Arteta’s plans. Until such interest is shown, Arsenal will not initiate negotiations.
Arteta, when questioned about the speculation surrounding Alvarez, chose not to directly address the club’s interest. He mentioned that players are aware of the extensive transfer speculation and that he prefers to communicate directly with his squad about any potential new signings in their positions. Arteta stated he would inform players if competition were to increase due to new arrivals, emphasizing transparency within the team.
Potential Stepping Stone to Barcelona
According to football expert Tim Vickery, the decision ultimately rests with Atletico. The club faces the choice of retaining a player who may not wish to stay or cashing in on him. Vickery noted that selling to Barcelona or Real Madrid is not an option for Atletico, limiting their choices for potential buyers to clubs that can afford the player, primarily in the Premier League.
Vickery suggested that Arsenal could offer Alvarez a compelling narrative, particularly the opportunity to be part of their first Champions League campaign. He also posited that, depending on the contract terms, a move to Arsenal could potentially serve as a stepping stone for Alvarez to eventually join Barcelona. Simeone has indicated that he will do everything to make Alvarez feel important once he returns to training.
In other transfer news, Aston Villa has completed the signing of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson on a five-year contract in a club-record deal worth £65m. This transfer reunites Jackson with manager Unai Emery, who he previously played under at Villarreal. Jackson’s arrival is seen as a replacement for Ollie Watkins, whose £50m move to Al-Hilal is being finalized.
