Pérez’s reluctance regarding Rodri
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is reportedly reluctant to pursue the signing of Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernández, despite reports suggesting the player’s keen interest in joining the club this summer. Rodri, who recently helped Spain secure their second FIFA World Cup title, is said to be eager for a move to the Spanish capital.
According to Spanish press reports, a transfer for Rodri would be relatively affordable for Los Blancos, as his current contract is set to expire in 2027. However, sources indicate that Pérez is not interested in the move as things currently stand.
One of the primary reasons cited for Pérez’s reluctance is an alleged agreement Rodri reached a few months ago with candidate Enrique Riquelme during the club’s presidential elections. Riquelme’s defeat to Pérez has left this situation in a state of limbo, with no changes reported since.
Other factors contributing to Pérez’s current mindset include Rodri’s age, as he turned 30 last month, and a recent ACL injury he sustained just a year ago. Despite these concerns, some reports suggest that Pérez could still reconsider, especially given Rodri’s potential popularity among the fanbase.
Club’s transfer strategy and other targets
Real Madrid is reportedly maintaining a consistent approach to the transfer market, largely unaffected by the speculation that often accompanies major tournaments like the World Cup. The club believes much of its transfer work is already complete.
The club attributes many of the recent transfer rumors, particularly those involving players performing well in the World Cup, to behind-the-scenes actions by agents. This perspective applies to both Rodri Hernández and Enzo Fernández, who are set to feature in the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium.
Regarding Enzo Fernández, who has been a standout player for Argentina with crucial goals in the knockout rounds, including an equalizer against England, it is understood that he wishes to leave Chelsea. However, Real Madrid has not made any move for the midfielder, and a transfer does not appear likely unless there is a significant and unexpected shift in circumstances.
Similarly, the club has not made any approach to Rodri or his representatives, despite numerous reports suggesting otherwise. Rodri, a Madrid-born player and the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, has seemingly overcome the effects of a serious knee injury, a setback that several Real Madrid players have experienced in recent seasons. He has also expressed openness to joining the club.
The club’s current transfer roadmap reportedly led to the acquisition of full-backs Cucurella and Dumfries, who were identified as top performers at the World Cup before their market value increased. Additionally, experienced players Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté have also been signed.
Following Pérez’s re-election on June 7, a shift in Real Madrid‘s communication policy has been observed. The club has actively worked to address and quell rumors, such as those linking them with Michael Olise and later with Enzo, aiming to prevent false expectations among their supporters.
The club’s stance regarding Rodri remains unchanged since his name was prominent during the elections as one of Enrique Riquelme’s campaign promises.
