Ghana’s World Cup preparations and ticket distribution
As Ghana prepares for its participation in the 2026 World Cup, the Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has provided clarity on the distribution of tickets for Ghanaian fans. He stated that a significant portion of the tickets acquired by the Government of Ghana for the tournament are “tagged tickets,” a measure implemented to ensure transparency and prevent resale. This system aims to prevent individuals from selling tickets and later claiming non-receipt.
Mr. Adams explained that 80 per cent of the tickets purchased by the government are tagged, meaning they are linked to specific individuals and cannot be freely transferred or resold. This approach was adopted to prevent scalping, particularly for critical matches, and to ensure that the tickets reach genuine supporters of the Black Stars.
The minister confirmed that none of the government-purchased tickets have been distributed to any individual or group yet. Prospective beneficiaries are required to undergo a registration process to receive their tickets. The Ghana High Commission in Canada has already outlined procedures for interested supporters, which include submitting email addresses and downloading the FIFA mobile application.
Furthermore, Mr. Adams highlighted that the tickets will only become active 24 hours before each match. This activation process makes it difficult for anyone to transfer or resell the tickets, reinforcing the government’s commitment to preventing abuse of the allocation system. He reiterated that all tickets remain under the control of the authorities and have not been released to fans at this stage.
Ghana’s World Cup fixtures and team overview
Ghana is set to open its Group L campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto. Following this, the Black Stars will face England on June 23 in Boston, and conclude their group stage matches against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia. The government’s purchase of tickets is intended to ensure a strong Ghanaian presence at these stadiums.

The 2026 World Cup, which has expanded to include 48 nations, will run from June 11 to July 19. Matches will be hosted across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The top two teams from each group, along with the top eight third-place finishers, will advance to the knockout phase, specifically the Round of 32.
Ghana, ranked 73rd by FIFA, is part of the CAF (Africa) confederation. This marks their fifth appearance in the World Cup, with their most notable performance being a quarter-final finish in 2010. The team is recognized as one of Africa’s prominent sides and has a history of achieving unexpected results against higher-ranked opponents.
Key players for the Black Stars include captain Jordan Ayew, Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo, and Athletic Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams. Head coach Carlos Queiroz’s side will aim to leverage their experience and talent in the tournament.
Panama’s World Cup journey and team composition
Panama, with a FIFA World Ranking of 34, belongs to the Concacaf (North America, Central America & Caribbean) confederation. This tournament represents only their second appearance in the World Cup, having made their debut in 2018. The team, known as Los Canaleros, will be looking to secure their first World Cup point (either a win or a draw) during this summer’s competition.
The Panamanian squad is captained by San Diego FC midfielder Aníbal Godoy, who is also the country’s most-capped player. Other notable players include Minnesota United FC defender Carlos Harvey, former Houston Dynamo FC midfielder Coco Carasquilla, fullback Amir Murillo (formerly of Red Bull New York), and winger Alberto Quintero (formerly of San Jose Earthquakes). Head coach Thomas Christiansen’s team will conclude their group stage matches against Croatia on June 23 and England on June 27.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received 700 tickets for the match against Panama, with a similar number for the England game and 625 for the Croatia fixture, as disclosed by Minister Adams on June 10, 2026.
