Liverpool clear the way for Slot to become Netherlands coachLiverpool clear the way for Slot to become Netherlands coach

Slot considered for Netherlands role

Arne Slot is being considered as a candidate for the head coach position of the Netherlands national team. This follows the resignation of Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the team’s early exit from the World Cup in the round of 32, where they lost to Morocco. Reports indicate that initial discussions have already taken place regarding Slot’s potential appointment.

Slot, who was relieved of his duties by Liverpool at the end of May, is among several candidates for the role. The opportunity would provide him with an immediate return to coaching on the international stage.

Liverpool’s financial arrangements for Slot

Liverpool is reportedly clearing the way for Slot to potentially become the new Netherlands coach. The club aims to ensure that Slot does not forfeit his right to financial compensation following his departure from Anfield at the end of last season.

According to one report, Liverpool plans to increase Slot’s salary during his first year as the national team coach to match the amount he would have earned had he remained with the club. This arrangement would prevent Slot from experiencing any financial loss, while also allowing his former club to save money. Slot’s contract with Liverpool runs through the summer of 2027.

Clubs, particularly in England, have increasingly opted to continue paying dismissed managers’ salaries until their contracts conclude, rather than issuing a single severance payment. While managers often waive their right to remaining salary months upon accepting a new position, such agreements were more common before the significant increase in managerial salaries at the top level of the Premier League, where compensation packages have become considerably more substantial.

When Slot signed a three-year contract with Liverpool in 2024, his salary for the first year was around €8 million. After guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title in May 2025, his salary was increased for the second and third years of his deal. Liverpool is believed to be willing to supplement Slot’s first-year salary with the Netherlands national team to match what he would have earned at Anfield. This approach could allow Liverpool to reduce the amount it still owes him by offsetting part of the payment through his new role.

Liverpool‘s stance might have differed if Slot had joined a rival Premier League club. However, the club reportedly appreciated his conduct after his dismissal a week following the final league match and is prepared to support his transition into international management.

Potential international reunion

Should Slot take on the role, he could potentially reunite with several players he worked with at Anfield, including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Jeremie Frimpong. However, Virgil van Dijk has been mentioned as potentially retiring from international football after the World Cup.

The Netherlands national team is currently without a head coach, and the first Nations League fixture against Germany is scheduled for September.

There is also a plausible chance that Slot could face his predecessor at Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp, in the coming months. Klopp is reportedly set to become the next head coach of Germany following the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann after their early exit from the World Cup. The respective homelands of Slot and Klopp have been drawn in the same UEFA Nations League group, with matches scheduled for September 24 in Amsterdam and November 16.
