Weep for Ghanaian Nurses: It'll take 28 years for a Ghanaian Nurse to Earn The Annual Salary of A Nurse in The United States

We all need to weep for Ghanaian Nurses because it will take 28 years for a Ghanaian Nurse to earn the annual salary of a Nurse in Luxembourg or the United States of America.

If you are a nurse, a student in nursing training college, a student aspiring to become a nurse or a doctor, this article must not discourage you but instead inspire you to become a professional nurse. Take proactive steps from the onset to meet all the international basic requirements for nurses so that if an opportunity to work aboard comes your way, you can grab it or else, others will be earning your two years annual income on a monthly basis.

This means the Ghanaian nurse is seriously underpaid and unappreciated. No wonder many nurses and doctors leave the shores of Ghana for greener pastures in the developed world where their services are valued and paid for.

The Average Salaries for Nurses 2023 (Annual) in Ghana is $3,294 this converts into GHS38,869.20 at the current Dollar to Cedi Exchange rate of GHS11.80 as quoted by Forbes.

The same nurse with the same qualification working in Luxembourg earns an annual income of $91,000. This translates into $7,583.33 a month. Thus, the monthly income of a nurse in Luxembourg is more than twice what the Ghanaian nurse gets paid in the entire year. We can say that, the monthly income of a nurse in Luxembourg is more than the two years’ annual income of the Ghanaian nurse. This is beyond weeping.

As a country, we cannot and should not blame nurses for travelling outside the country to work. After all, they have the needed skills and as a rational being should offer them where the pay or reward is better.

Nurses in the United States of America receive $77,460 as annual salaries. Comparing this to their Ghanaian counterpart is another insult added to injury because this translates into $6,455 a year, which is almost 2 years annual income of the Ghanaian nurse.

In the United Kingdom -nurses are paid $42,365 which translates into $3,552 a month. This is also more than the 12 months salary of the Ghanaian nurse in Ghana.

The government of Ghana must take proactive steps to change this trend. Pay nurses better, provide health workers with incentives that will make them stay in the country and work or lose them all to countries that value their services.
