USA secures top spot in group stage

The United States men’s national team secured the top position in their World Cup group despite a 3-2 loss to Turkey in Inglewood, California, on Thursday. The match, which saw a last-gasp goal from Turkey in stoppage time, concluded the group stage for the U.S., who had already qualified for the knockout rounds as group winners. This outcome allowed coach Mauricio Pochettino to rotate his squad, making nine changes to the starting lineup that had previously defeated Australia on June 19.

Pochettino expressed some frustration with media questions after the match, noting that the focus seemed to be on the defeat rather than the team’s achievement of winning the group. He emphasised that the primary objective was to finish first, which the team accomplished. The coach also highlighted the importance of squad depth and the opportunity to rest key players while avoiding yellow cards that could lead to suspensions in the upcoming knockout rounds.

The U.S. had previously secured victories of 4-1 against Paraguay and 2-0 against Australia, accumulating eight goals in the group stage, which marks the highest number for the men’s national team in any single World Cup. Turkey, on the other hand, had already been eliminated from the tournament prior to Thursday’s game.

Pulisic’s return and team depth

A significant development during the match was the return of star player Christian Pulisic, who entered as a substitute in the 58th minute. Pulisic had been sidelined for the previous four halves due to a calf injury, which he initially sustained during training in early June and was exacerbated in the tournament’s opening game. His performance was described as strong, showing no apparent physical limitations, and he made an immediate impact, with one shot hitting the post in the 63rd minute and another going just wide in the 77th minute.

Pochettino confirmed that getting Pulisic some game action was a key objective for the match, and he seemed encouraged by the attacker’s progress, stating, “Yes, I’m happy — he finished well. It was a good impact when he was on the pitch.” Midfielder Brendan Aaronson also praised Pulisic’s return, noting, “He came on, he was electric as always.”

The coach’s decision to rotate the squad allowed seven players to make their first appearances of the tournament, providing valuable experience. Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, who scored in the 49th minute, acknowledged the coach’s belief in the team’s depth. This strategy, according to Pochettino, was similar to how other teams, such as Germany, managed their group stage circumstances, with Germany reportedly losing to Ecuador after playing many regulars.

Looking ahead to the knockout stage

With the group stage concluded, the U.S. now shifts its focus to the do-or-die knockout rounds. The team is scheduled to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 1 in Santa Clara, California. Bosnia and Herzegovina finished third in Group B, behind Canada and Switzerland.

Players and coaching staff remain confident about the team’s readiness for the next stage. Aaronson stated, “We’re really ready to go, and you know we’re going to take this Bosnia game and do the best we can, and we’re going to be really prepared.” The U.S. has a history of reaching the knockout rounds in three of its last four World Cups, with two exits in the round of 16 and a quarterfinal run in 2002.

Should the U.S. advance past Bosnia and Herzegovina, the team could potentially remain in the same time zone for over a month, with a possible round of 16 match in Seattle on July 6 and a quarterfinal in Los Angeles four days later.

Pochettino reiterated his satisfaction with the team’s performance, despite the final match result, saying, “The objective is to finish first. And we are first. And now is the next stage. We are ready.”
