Rangers faced a defeat in their Europa League third qualifying round tie, losing 2-1 to Jagiellonia Białystok in Poland. Defensive errors by Derek McInnes’ side were capitalised on by the home team, particularly in the first half of the first leg.
The match began with a promising start for the visitors. In the fourth minute, Tuur Rommens delivered a low cross that deflected off home defender Guilherme Montoia and into the net, giving Rangers an early lead. This initial advantage, however, was short-lived due to defensive lapses.
First-Half Defensive Lapses
Jagiellonia Białystok quickly responded, with Kajetan Szmyt levelling the score in the 13th minute. His shot from the edge of the box curled towards goal and found its way in at the far post. This goal was described as preventable, highlighting the defensive issues for Rangers.
Just eight minutes later, Szmyt scored his second goal. The sequence began with a counter-attack after Thelo Aasgaard’s flick at the edge of Jagiellonia’s penalty area was intercepted. During the subsequent cross from Nik Prelec, Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez slipped. Although Ivor Pandur made an initial save from Jesus Imaz’s shot, Szmyt was quick to react, firing in the rebound to double his tally.
Further defensive vulnerabilities were evident in the 37th minute when Dujon Sterling gave the ball away. This allowed Rodrigo Conceicao to break clear, but he shot against the side-netting instead of passing to teammates in a better position. Pandur also had to parry an effort from Prelec and made another save from Norbert Wojtuszek just before the half-time whistle.
Second-Half Adjustments and Pressure
Recognising the need for change, Derek McInnes made three substitutions at half-time. Cammy Devlin, Findlay Curtis, and Nicolas Raskin were introduced, replacing Dan Neil, Tochi Chukwuani, and Daisuke Yokota. Yokota, a winger signed from Hannover, had made his debut in the match.
These changes appeared to shift the momentum, with Rangers dominating possession in the second half. Szmyt, however, still had an opportunity for a hat-trick, with a shot straight at Pandur. Jesus Imaz also skewed a first-time attempt wide after another swift counter-attack by the home side.
Rangers pressed for an equaliser, with Devlin being set up by Mohamed Diomande in the 59th minute, though he was crowded out. Curtis also knocked a delivery from Raskin inches wide. Moments later, Devlin’s shot from 20 yards was tipped over by Jagiellonia keeper Slawomir Abramowicz, but the resulting corner did not yield a goal.
The visitors continued to push strongly towards the end of the match. Ross McCrorie had a powerful drive blocked, and substitute Lawrence Shankland’s effort was smothered from close range. In stoppage time, Curtis rattled the post with a volley. Despite these efforts and a strong finish, Rangers could not find a leveller, and the match concluded with Jagiellonia Białystok securing a 2-1 victory.
Looking Ahead
The result means Rangers will need to turn the tie around in the second leg, which is scheduled to be played at Ibrox next week. The qualification for the next stage of the Europa League now hangs in the balance for McInnes’ team.
