Vinicius Jr and Real Madrid agree new six-year dealVinicius Jr and Real Madrid agree new six-year deal

Vinicius Jr, the Brazil winger, has agreed to a new six-year contract with Real Madrid, extending his stay at the Bernabeu until 2032. The agreement was announced on Thursday, confirming that the player will remain with the club for an additional six years.

The 26-year-old had entered the final 12 months of his previous contract, which had drawn interest from Arsenal. However, Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr have now finalized terms for the extension. Vinicius Jr expressed his commitment on Instagram, stating, "Eight years at the Bernabeu are too short… Six more years, and then forever." Real Madrid also released a statement, highlighting that Vinicius Jr "has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history."

Contract Negotiations and Club Impact

Discussions regarding a new deal had been ongoing for the past 18 months, with talks reportedly at an impasse until Real Madrid presented a new offer on Wednesday. Vinicius Jr is understood to have appreciated these fresh terms. He returned to the club on Monday for his initial pre-season training session and medical assessment following his participation in the World Cup campaign with Brazil.

Vinicius Jr initially joined Real Madrid from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2018 and had previously signed a contract extension three years ago. During his tenure, he has scored 128 goals in 375 appearances across all competitions for Real Madrid. He has also contributed 13 goals in 54 caps for Brazil.

His contributions have helped Real Madrid secure significant titles, including two Champions League titles, three La Ligas, and one Copa del Rey.

Transfer Market Implications

Arsenal had been closely monitoring Vinicius Jr’s contract situation, with reports indicating they would have accelerated their interest if he had rejected Real Madrid’s terms. With his commitment to Real Madrid, the Premier League champions will now need to explore other options as they aim to strengthen their left-sided forward position.

The contract extension for Vinicius Jr coincides with other significant transfer activity for Real Madrid. On the same day, the club announced the signing of Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee reported to be worth up to £120m (140m euros). Diomande is the sixth summer signing for Real Madrid under new head coach Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi.

Real Madrid is also reportedly targeting Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri, though they now face competition from Barcelona for his signature. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta has expressed optimism about the club’s transfer window plans, aiming to "attack every possible title" this season. Arsenal is reportedly close to finalizing a £75m deal for Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, who underwent a medical in London on Thursday.

Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40m, has made 195 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 31 goals. Newcastle had aimed to retain Guimaraes, who has two years remaining on his contract with an additional club option for a third year. If the deal proceeds as expected, Newcastle could generate over £240m from player sales this summer, including Anthony Gordon’s £69.3m move to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali’s £100m transfer to Spurs.

The new contract will keep Vinicius Jr at Real Madrid until June 30, 2032.
