Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in negotiations regarding the potential sale of defender Djed Spence. Reports indicate that Spence is open to a move to Italy, with a potential transfer fee of around €40m (£34.5m) being discussed.
Despite his performances for England, Spence’s future at Tottenham appears uncertain as the club continues to reshape its squad. One suggestion is that his playing style, which involves significant dribbling, might not align with manager Roberto De Zerbi’s tactics that favour short, quick passing.
Spence’s Role and Tottenham’s Defensive Options
The potential departure of Spence raises questions about Tottenham’s fullback depth. The current squad includes Destiny Udogie, Souza, and Pedro Porro, along with other players like Micky van de Ven and Archie Gray who can play out of position.
Selling a versatile fullback who can cover both sides of the pitch might seem unusual, especially since Spurs rarely play more than one match per week. However, Spence reportedly seeks a starting role, which he might not secure at Tottenham unless Udogie or Porro are unavailable for an extended period.
While there is no agreement in place yet, Inter Milan is expected to negotiate the transfer fee. The Italian club has other priorities this summer, which could influence the deal’s outcome. Nevertheless, if a suitable price can be agreed upon, the move could proceed.
Liverpool’s Stance and Other Transfer News
Meanwhile, Liverpool has no intention of pursuing a transfer for Djed Spence this summer, despite recent defensive injuries. The club has seen several defenders, including Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Conor Bradley, affected by injuries during the pre-season.
Liverpool is reportedly prioritizing an attacking player to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah’s departure. Bradley Barcola has been linked, though Paris Saint-Germain is reportedly seeking more than £100m for the player. His teammate, Ibrahim Mbaye, has emerged as a potential alternative, possibly available for a lower fee.
Other attacking players reportedly considered by Liverpool include Brighton’s Yankiba Minteh, Said El Mala of Koln, and Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo. The club has two more friendly matches scheduled before their Premier League campaign begins against Newcastle on August 23.
In other transfer news, Juventus is looking to secure Joshua Zirkzee on a loan deal without an obligation to buy from Manchester United.
