Kylian Mbappé, the Real Madrid star, has shared his thoughts on the AI-generated memes circulating on social media that depict him as a dictator. While acknowledging some humour in the portrayals, Mbappé expressed his discomfort with being compared to historical figures associated with significant tragedies.
During the World Cup, images of the France international appeared in military attire, seated on a throne, or alongside controversial leaders such as Soviet leader Josef Stalin. Speaking to France Football magazine, Mbappé noted that while some of these memes were clearly light-hearted, others carried a more serious undertone due to the historical context of such comparisons.
Mbappé’s perspective on the memes
Mbappé explained that a part of the meme trend was amusing, as it seemed to be good-natured from some creators. However, he also highlighted a less humorous aspect, pointing to the immense damage caused by individuals like those he was being compared to throughout history. He stated that he did not believe he had ever caused such harm in his life, leading to a mixed reaction from him.
The France striker, who surpassed Lionel Messi‘s record for all-time World Cup goals with 22, further elaborated on his feelings. He recognised that the memes were often created in jest and not intended to be taken to an extreme. Nevertheless, he suggested that such comparisons sometimes reveal a lack of political and human awareness among people.
Mbappé was also reminded during the interview about a nickname given to him by his France teammate, Ousmane Dembélé. Dembélé had playfully referred to Mbappé as “Mobut,” a reference to Mobutu Sese Seko, the former leader of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who was known for his autocratic rule.
Regarding Dembélé’s nickname, Mbappé clarified that the situation was different. He noted that Dembélé had picked up the term from social media, and in their context, it was simply a joke between teammates. This distinction highlights Mbappé’s view on the intent behind different uses of the “dictator” label.

In other news surrounding the player, it was revealed earlier in the week that Manchester United had decided against pursuing Mbappé in 2015. This decision came after the club’s scouts were reportedly unimpressed by a recommendation to sign the then-youngster, who was playing for Monaco at the time.
