Chelsea has announced the signing of Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano. The left-back has agreed to a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the deal reportedly valued at approximately £16.3m, plus an additional £1.7m in add-ons. Chavarria is set to join his new teammates at Cobham as preparations for the 2026/27 campaign begin.

Chavarria’s unconventional journey to the top
Chavarria’s route to an elite club like Chelsea has been described as unconventional. Unlike many players who emerge from prestigious academies or achieve early top-flight breakthroughs, Chavarria took a longer path. He did not make his La Liga debut until the age of 24, an age when many players have already established themselves at the highest level of football.
Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Chavarria began his career with his hometown club, UE Figueres, in the Spanish fourth tier. He made his senior debut at 18 years old. Over two seasons, he developed into an attack-minded left-back before moving to UE Olot in 2018. At Olot, a third-tier club, he quickly became a starter and was recognised as one of the division’s standout players, making 52 appearances.
In August 2020, Chavarria joined Real Zaragoza, then in the Spanish second tier, where he made his professional debut the following month. After two seasons with Zaragoza, he made the step up to La Liga, signing with Rayo Vallecano in August 2022. His time at Rayo Vallecano saw him develop into a dependable top-flight full-back, known for combining defensive aggression with the necessary physicality for the role.
During his four years at Rayo, Chavarria became a mainstay in the team, making 125 appearances and consistently featuring on the left side of defence. He played a crucial role in the club’s historic back-to-back eighth-place finishes in La Liga over the past two seasons. Last season, he featured 44 times and started in the Conference League final, where Rayo Vallecano suffered a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.
Impact on Chelsea’s defensive strategy
Chavarria’s arrival at Chelsea is expected to provide depth to the left-back position, especially after Marc Cucurella‘s move to Real Madrid in June for £51.8m. His signing also offers manager Xabi Alonso the opportunity to implement his preferred wing-back system, which proved successful in helping Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title in 2024.
He will join new right-back Marco Palestra, who signed for Chelsea from Atalanta in July for £47m. Chavarria’s performance against Real Madrid in a goalless draw last November, where he displayed aggression and discipline against elite attacking players, reportedly left a strong impression on Alonso, making him a key target for the Spanish coach after his appointment as Chelsea manager.
The transfer negotiations for Chavarria were described as “complicated.” Rayo Vallecano initially indicated they would not sell the player unless his release clause, valued at £42.4m, was met. Sources at Rayo believed the price was justified, citing Chavarria’s underlying statistics as comparable to Cucurella’s. Despite the complexities, Chelsea successfully secured the defender’s services.
Last season, Chavarria scored once and provided three assists across all competitions, creating 27 chances from open play in La Liga. He had four years remaining on his contract with Rayo Vallecano, a club known for its successful player-trading model and strong financial position, which allowed them to resist offers similarly to Spain’s traditional top clubs.
