Arsenal has completed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75m. The 28-year-old Brazil midfielder has signed a four-year deal, which includes an option for an additional 12 months. Guimaraes expressed that this move was one of the most challenging decisions of his life, stating that Newcastle holds significant meaning for him, but he desired a new experience and challenge for himself and his family.

Guimaraes departed Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga, Spain, earlier this week to finalize his transfer to Emirates Stadium. This followed a breakthrough in discussions between the clubs. He mentioned receiving messages from several future teammates, including fellow Brazilian Gabriel and midfielder Declan Rice. Rice reportedly told him, “come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends,” referencing their previous encounters on the field.

The midfielder shared his excitement for the new chapter, stating, “I’m at the point of my life, I think I need a challenge like this. I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start.” Newcastle wished Guimaraes and his family well following his departure.

Guimaraes’ impact and role at Arsenal

Guimaraes joined Newcastle in January 2022 when the team was facing relegation challenges. He played a vital role in the club’s improved performance under former head coach Eddie Howe. He was part of the squad that secured Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025. He also lifted a major domestic trophy for Newcastle after their victory in the 2025 Carabao Cup final.

Arsenal’s Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, highlighted Guimaraes’ versatility, noting, “With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year.” This versatility to operate as a ‘number six’ or ‘number eight’ is expected to be appealing to manager Mikel Arteta.

At Newcastle, Guimaraes initially played as a central defensive midfielder in Howe’s 4-3-3 system but gradually transitioned into a more advanced role. He often interchanged positions with Sandro Tonali. His performance in the 2025/26 season included a strong run from October to February at St James’ Park, where he accumulated 85 points, including seven goals and five assists, between Gameweeks 7 and 25.

Potential FPL implications and team dynamics

The arrival of Guimaraes introduces new dynamics to Arsenal’s midfield, which already includes players like Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Kai Havertz. In terms of set-piece contributions, Guimaraes has demonstrated a notable ability to win free-kicks, having suffered 410 fouls in the Premier League during his time in England. He has also scored 12 goals from set-pieces, a figure matched by only one other midfielder or forward since early 2022. This aspect could be particularly valuable for Arsenal, a team known for its effectiveness from set plays.

Guimaraes’ transfer is the most expensive for a midfielder aged at least 28. This highlights Arsenal’s valuation of the player, who will be in his 30s before the end of next year. The move is seen as a transfer for immediate impact. Guimaraes’ ability to break up attacks is also a key attribute, especially considering Arsenal misplaced 1,492 passes in the final third last season, the fourth-highest in the Premier League.

Guimaraes was penalized for 45 fouls in the league last season, a mark he reached in all four of his full campaigns with Newcastle. Despite committing the fourth-most fouls in the competition since his debut in February 2022, nine players have received more yellow cards than him during that period. His ability to draw fouls, combined with his goal-scoring potential from set-pieces, makes him a significant addition to the Arsenal squad.
