Senegal establishes early dominance

Senegal has established a significant lead against Belgium in their World Cup round of 32 match in Seattle. Goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr have given the African side a two-goal advantage, reflecting their strong performance throughout the game. The match, held at Seattle Stadium, is a crucial fixture in the knockout stage of the tournament.

Ismaïla Sarr extended Senegal‘s lead with a goal in the 54th minute, following an earlier strike from Habib Diarra. Sarr’s finish came after he raced through the Belgium defence, converting a long ball from Niakhate. This goal put Senegal firmly in control, making it a challenging path back for Belgium.

Before Sarr’s goal, Habib Diarra had a golden opportunity to double the lead but sent his shot wide from a Sadio Mane cutback. Despite this missed chance, Senegal continued to press, with Iliman Ndiaye also having an early opportunity in the second half, his volley just missing the post.

Belgium struggles to find rhythm

Belgium has struggled to find coherence and strategy, particularly in key moments of the match. Their attempts to get Romelu Lukaku involved in the final third have been largely unsuccessful. Efforts from players like Castagne, whose header went wide, and Tielemans, who lifted his finish over the bar, highlight their difficulties in converting chances.

The team, often referred to as the ‘Golden Generation,’ appears to be running on fumes. Lukebakio had a late lifeline opportunity, with his shot spinning just inches over the bar. The lack of offensive output has led to substitutions, with Rudi Garcia bringing on Romelu Lukaku at halftime for De Ketelaere. Later in the second half, Lukebakio replaced Doku, and Nicolas Raskin came on for Kevin De Bruyne, indicating a search for a breakthrough.

Further changes for Belgium included Diego Moreira replacing Hans Vanaken, and Thomas Meunier coming on for M. De Cuyper. These substitutions reflect the team’s struggle to respond to Senegal‘s pressure and find a way back into the match. Brandon Mechele also received a yellow card for a foul on Ismaila Sarr.

Senegal’s tactical changes and previous form

Senegal has also made tactical changes, with Pape Sarr and Mbaye entering the game for Ndiaye and Diarra in the 73rd minute. Earlier, Lamine Camara replaced Pape Gueye. Camara received a yellow card shortly after coming on for a foul on Leandro Trossard.

Both teams entered this round of 32 fixture following strong performances in their final group-stage matches. Belgium secured a 5-1 victory over New Zealand, topping Group G. However, their earlier group stage matches saw them draw 1-1 with Egypt and play to a goalless draw with Iran, a match in which Nathan Ngoy was sent off.

Senegal advanced as one of the best third-placed teams after a 5-0 win against a ten-man Iraq. Prior to this, they had lost 3-1 to France and 3-2 to Norway in their Group I fixtures. Ismaila Sarr, who scored against Belgium, has been in strong form, having scored 17 goals in his last 30 appearances for his club and country. Senegal‘s first-choice goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, was a major doubt for the match due to a knee injury, with Mory Diaw deputising.

The match is being played on Wednesday, July 1, with a kick-off time of 9pm BST.
