The 2026 World Cup has progressed into the knockout rounds, with several prominent players distinguishing themselves in the race for the Golden Boot award. This accolade is presented to the tournament’s top goal scorer, with assists serving as a tiebreaker if multiple players achieve the same goal tally.

Kylian Mbappé of France currently leads the competition. He has scored six goals and provided two assists. Mbappé registered two goals in the Round of 32 match against Sweden, following group-stage braces against Senegal and Iraq. He was also the recipient of the Golden Boot during the 2022 World Cup.

Lionel Messi of Argentina also has six goals. However, with no assists recorded, he is currently behind Mbappé in the standings. Messi contributed to his goal count with a hat trick in Argentina’s opening game against Algeria and a brace against Austria. He also scored a free kick late in group play. Messi’s next opportunity to potentially reclaim the top spot will be on Friday when Argentina faces Cape Verde in the Round of 32.

Key Contenders in the Golden Boot Race

Several other players are closely trailing Mbappé and Messi. Norway’s Erling Haaland and England’s Harry Kane each have five goals. Haaland scored in the final moments of Norway’s Round of 32 victory over Ivory Coast. Kane, who won the Golden Boot in the 2018 World Cup, scored twice in England’s Round of 32 win against DR Congo, including the game-winning goal in the 86th minute.

Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal and Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior have each scored four goals. Oyarzabal achieved his tally with a pair of goals in Spain’s Round of 32 match against Austria, and he also has one assist. France’s Ousmane Dembélé also has four goals and two assists.

Other players who have recorded hat tricks in the tournament include Dembélé, whose three goals came rapidly in group play against Norway, and Canada’s Jonathan David, whose hat trick contributed to Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar, marking the country’s first-ever World Cup win.

Historical Context and Current Standings

The Golden Boot award is determined by the number of goals scored. If players are tied on goals, the player with more assists is ranked higher. Should both goals and assists be equal, the award goes to the player who achieved their statistics in fewer minutes played.

As of Thursday evening, seven players with at least four goals remain in the World Cup. Mbappé is the current holder of the Golden Boot, having scored eight goals in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Kane previously won the award in 2018.

The competition for the Golden Boot is considered to be particularly intense this year. Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal has scored two goals in the tournament, both during a 5-0 group stage win against Uzbekistan. Portugal is scheduled to play Croatia in the Round of 32 on Thursday.

Historically, Just Fontaine of France holds the record for the most goals in a single World Cup, with 13 goals in the 1958 tournament. Messi leads in overall World Cup goals among active players with 19, followed by Mbappé with 18.
