France’s commanding performance

France delivered a dominant display against Sweden, securing a 3-0 victory in the World Cup 2026 round of 32. The match, played in the intense New Jersey heat, showcased the team’s exceptional talent and strong unity. This win has propelled Les Bleus into the last 16, where they are scheduled to face Paraguay.

The opening goal came from Kylian Mbappé, who, after scoring, immediately embraced head coach Didier Deschamps. This heartfelt moment, which saw the entire team join in a group hug, marked Deschamps’ return to the dugout following his mother’s funeral. Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni highlighted the team’s commitment, stating, “We know the coach is going through a lot, we are trying to give everything to make him as happy as possible.”

Bradley Barcola extended France’s lead to 2-0, and Mbappé added his second goal, bringing his tournament tally to six, matching Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. The team’s attacking prowess was evident throughout the game, with Michael Olise contributing two assists, bringing his total to five for the tournament. France has now achieved the remarkable feat of scoring three or more goals in five consecutive World Cup matches.

Individual brilliance and collective strength

The individual statistics of the French players are notably impressive. Ousmane Dembele, a Ballon d’Or winner, has been involved in six goals, scoring four and assisting two. Olise’s five assists make him the first player since 1994 to achieve this many assists in a single World Cup tournament. Born in Hammersmith, Olise began his football journey at Hayes & Yeading United at the age of six. Deschamps praised Olise’s impact, describing him as a “major influence within the squad” and a crucial link between the strikers and defence.

Mbappé, in particular, has been a standout performer. His two goals against Sweden brought his total World Cup goals to 18, just one behind Messi, who holds the record for most goals in the competition’s history. Mbappé has scored two or more goals in seven different World Cup matches, a record unmatched by any other player. Former England striker Ian Wright remarked on France’s form, calling them “one of the most clear favourites I have ever seen in a World Cup tournament.”

The synergy between Dembele and Mbappé has also been exceptional, with the duo combining for six goals in the United States, a record for any pair in the competition since 1966. Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist noted that the team’s forward areas are “riddled with superstars,” explaining why they are strong favourites.

Looking ahead to the knockout stages

Despite the comprehensive victory, Deschamps remains cautious about looking too far ahead. When asked about France’s chances of going all the way, he urged for calm, stating, “Please, slow down. There is always room for improvement and things shouldn’t be all gold.” He emphasized the importance of staying focused, acknowledging that the teams they will face will become progressively stronger.

If France manages to defeat Paraguay in their last-16 tie on Saturday, 4 July, they will advance to the quarter-finals. Their potential opponent would be the winner of the match between co-hosts Canada and Morocco. The quarter-final fixture is scheduled to take place at Boston Stadium on Thursday, 9 July.

Sweden’s coach, Graham Potter, acknowledged the quality of the French side, admitting, “It’s no disgrace to go out to this France team. I haven’t seen a better team.” The match against Sweden saw France register 25 attempts, their highest total in a single World Cup match since 1998, underscoring their relentless attacking pressure.
