France reclaims top spot in FIFA rankings

France has ascended to the top of the live FIFA Men’s World Rankings following an undefeated run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This performance has positioned Les Bleus above Argentina and Spain. The team, led by Didier Deschamps, secured first place with 1,925.86 points after achieving victories against Senegal, Iraq, Norway, Sweden, and Paraguay.

This rise saw France surpass former leaders Argentina, who now hold the second position with 1,913.71 points. Spain remains in third place with 1,892.28 points. England is currently in fourth place with 1,850.97 points, despite their continued presence in the World Cup tournament.

Brazil occupies the fifth spot with 1,804.92 points after their exit in the Round of 16. Close behind, Morocco has climbed to a historic sixth place with 1,803.99 points. Portugal is ranked seventh with 1,787.85 points, followed by the Netherlands in eighth with 1,775.54 points. Belgium is ninth with 1,756.51 points, and Mexico completes the top 10 with 1,754.30 points.

The consistent victories of France in the World Cup have been a significant factor in their improved ranking. The FIFA rankings algorithm rewards wins against high-quality opposition. For instance, the victory over Norway during the group stage contributed 12.44 ranking points, and the Round of 32 win against Sweden added another 9.40 points, which helped them move ahead of Argentina.

Impact on individual player rankings

The FIFA World Cup quarterfinals have also led to significant changes in the individual player power rankings. Kylian Mbappe, captain of France, has maintained his top position in the overall Attacking rankings with a score of 8.97. His decisive performance against Morocco in the quarterfinals helped Les Bleus reach a third consecutive World Cup semifinal.

During the match against Morocco, Mbappe scored the opening goal, increasing his total World Cup tally to 20 goals in 20 appearances. He then assisted Ousmane Dembele for France’s second goal. His match Attacking score of 8.45 was the highest among all French players in that quarterfinal.

Mbappe’s influence extends beyond scoring, as he is ranked fourth overall in the Creativity charts with a rating of 7.65. He contributed to stretching Morocco’s defense with his movement before providing the assist for Dembele’s goal. However, his teammate Michael Olise, a winger for Bayern Munich, continues to lead the tournament in Creativity with a rating of 8.30. Despite not scoring or assisting against Morocco, Olise’s 13 ball progressions, nine completed midfield line-breaks, and involvement in 11 attacking sequences highlight his creative impact.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi experienced a drop in the rankings after a less impactful performance against Switzerland, where he did not score for the first time in Argentina’s campaign. This resulted in him slipping one place in the Attacking rankings.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham capitalized on this, climbing four places to second with a rating of 8.25 following his match-winning brace against Norway. Messi subsequently dropped to third with a rating of 8.07. England captain Harry Kane, who was closely marked by Norway, also fell five places to ninth after receiving a rating of 6.91.

Upcoming semifinal clashes

The semifinal stage is set to feature crucial battles that could further influence both team and individual player rankings. Jude Bellingham has an opportunity to solidify his second-place position, or even reduce the gap with Mbappe, when England faces Messi’s Argentina in Atlanta on July 16.

A day earlier, Kylian Mbappe will aim to reinforce his status as a top performer in the tournament when France plays against Spain in the first semifinal match.

Mexico has also re-entered the world’s top 10 rankings, a first since moving up from 14th place before the tournament. El Tri gained over 66 ranking points through victories against South Africa, South Korea, Czechia, and Ecuador before their World Cup journey concluded with a 3-2 defeat to England in the Round of 16. This rise confirms Mexico as the highest-ranked nation in CONCACAF, ahead of the United States and Canada. France will now seek to strengthen their hold on the world No. 1 position as they continue their World Cup campaign in the semifinals.
