England’s World Cup Exit and Managerial Scrutiny
England captain Harry Kane stated that the team is “missing that final piece of the jigsaw” after their World Cup 2026 semi-final defeat to Argentina. The match in Atlanta saw England take an early lead but ultimately lose 2-1. Manager Thomas Tuchel has faced criticism regarding his tactical approach, particularly after the team became more defensive following their goal.
The defeat marked another instance where England, under Tuchel, adopted a more passive stance after scoring. This mirrors past experiences under former manager Gareth Southgate, including the Euro 2021 final against Italy and a World Cup semi-final in 2018. According to reports, several key players expressed disappointment with the team’s strategy in the latter stages of the game.
Anthony Gordon scored for England in the 55th minute against Argentina. However, Argentina scored two late goals through Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to secure a 2-1 victory. Former England captain Wayne Rooney commented that Tuchel’s side “crumbled” and became “too passive” during the match.
Despite the criticism, Tuchel has defended his tactics, asserting that dropping deeper was not the intended plan. He suggested that it might not be in the team’s “DNA” to control possession consistently. The manager’s contract included clauses that could have led to an early termination if England had exited before the quarter-finals, but he is expected to continue in his role.
Player Reactions and Team Unity
Following the semi-final loss, Harry Kane shared his disappointment, noting that the team was “close, really close to another final but it wasn’t enough.” He emphasized the need for the team to “find a way to get better” and continue believing in their ability to achieve success.
Jude Bellingham, who, like Kane, scored six goals during the tournament, also expressed his struggle to find the right words after the team’s elimination. He called for “unity” among the team and fans, stating that “when we’re together we can achieve big things.”
Morgan Rogers, an Aston Villa midfielder, described himself as “devastated” by the defeat, highlighting the effort put in by the team. Anthony Gordon, who recently moved from Newcastle United to Barcelona, echoed these sentiments, stating that he “genuinely thought this was our time to win.”
The squad’s commitment and team ethic were central to Tuchel’s selection philosophy. He prioritized players who bought into a “brotherhood” concept and were willing to put the team’s goals above individual egos. This approach influenced decisions regarding player selections, with some notable players not making the final squad.

Looking Ahead to Euro 2028
The Football Association’s chief executive, Mark Bullingham, has expressed support for England to learn from their World Cup defeat and aim for success at the European Championships in 2028. England will co-host the tournament alongside Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
Bullingham expects Thomas Tuchel and his coaching staff to “raise everyone” in preparation for the upcoming Euros. Tuchel has also affirmed his “100 per cent” commitment to his role as England boss, stating that there is still much to improve upon and that he believes the team can still win a major tournament under his leadership.
The FA initially aimed for a World Cup triumph in 2026 when appointing Tuchel in October 2024. While Pep Guardiola was reportedly a primary target, Tuchel, a Champions League winner, was ultimately chosen. The team’s base camp for the World Cup was in the southern suburbs of Kansas City, selected for its central location and suitable facilities, aiming to create a comfortable environment for the players during their five-week stay.
England is scheduled to play a third-place play-off match against France on Saturday.
