Eze’s penalty stance for England
Eberechi Eze has affirmed his readiness to take a penalty for England at the World Cup, even after a recent miss in the Champions League final. The midfielder, who joined Arsenal from Crystal Palace last summer, stated he would “for sure” step up if called upon during a shootout for the national team. He views the experience as a part of his footballing journey and an opportunity for growth.
During the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest, Eze’s stuttered penalty attempt went wide. This occurred during a nerve-wracking shootout where Arsenal had the chance to go 3-1 up. Following Eze’s miss, Gabriel Magalhaes also missed his spot-kick, leading to PSG securing the victory and defending their European title.
Despite the setback, Eze remains resolute about his penalty technique, indicating he has used it for a considerable period. He believes in continuous improvement and does not intend to over-analyse individual incidents. He sees such moments as integral to a player’s development, highlighting that many prominent players have experienced similar situations.

Reflecting on the season and future outlook
The 27-year-old playmaker considers his missed penalty a valuable learning experience rather than something to regret. He expressed gratitude for the experience, stating he would grow and learn from it. Eze emphasized that playing in a Champions League final is where he aspires to be, and he is prepared to take another penalty should the opportunity arise in the future.
Thomas Tuchel, England‘s coach, included Eze in the 26-man squad for this summer’s tournament. Tuchel has expressed full support for Eze, along with his teammates and the coaching staff. He noted that the extra week the players had would be beneficial, acknowledging the pain of losing a final in a penalty shootout but also recognizing that it signifies being on par with top teams.
Eze reflected positively on the 2025-26 season, describing it as a period of significant personal growth. He highlighted that winning the Premier League title, which Arsenal secured just 11 days before the Champions League final, instills belief and resolve for future challenges. The title parade was described by Eze as a “beautiful experience” that will stay with him, contributing to his development as a player and individual.

Team support and collective achievement
Eze was one of four Arsenal players selected for England‘s squad, alongside Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Declan Rice, who was named Harry Kane‘s vice-captain. Tuchel expressed his happiness for the Arsenal quartet regarding their Premier League title win, suggesting it relieved a lot of pressure and demonstrated their commitment.
Tuchel noted that he had not spoken to the Arsenal players immediately after the Champions League final, opting to give them space to be proud of their achievements. He later communicated with them after their Premier League triumph, which he considered their main target. Tuchel believes the team is in good spirits, which is beneficial, and that the players are well aware of their accomplishments this season.
Eze’s focus remains on putting the Champions League disappointment behind him and using it as a stepping stone. He is determined not to over-stress about the incident, confident in his position and the training he has undertaken. The midfielder believes in maintaining a strong mentality to keep progressing, viewing every experience as part of the journey.

It remains to be seen whether Eze will feature in England‘s opening Group L match against Croatia at Dallas’ AT&T Stadium on Wednesday night.
