Dallas Stadium readies for World Cup opener

The Dallas Stadium, often referred to as “The Palace in Dallas,” is set to host England‘s opening World Cup match against Croatia. This venue, typically home to the NFL team the Dallas Cowboys, is known for its scale and technological advancements. Its construction cost over £1 billion and it features one of the world’s largest high-definition video screens, stretching from one penalty box to the other. The stadium is also notable for its retractable domed roof, which can open or close in 12 minutes, and is considered the world’s largest air-conditioned room when closed.

An 80,000 sell-out crowd is anticipated for England’s first group stage match. Fans have expressed admiration for the stadium’s grandeur, with one supporter noting that it makes Wembley “pale into comparison.” The stadium’s design was intended to impress, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stating a desire to build something that would evoke a “wow” reaction. One American football player described it as “like a space station touched down in North Texas.”

Despite its impressive features, the stadium’s construction faced controversy, as some residents were reportedly forced to sell their homes against their wishes. Demolition included houses that the city had seized from residents who had refused to sell. A resident described the negotiation for his home as being given “pennies and telling me to get out.”

Fan guidance for the match

Ahead of the match, authorities have issued specific guidance for supporters, particularly concerning local laws and expected behaviour. For instance, fans entering the stadium are warned against bringing handguns, whether openly carried or concealed. Eric Castillo, an American fan, acknowledged that while such signs might be uncommon in England, gun regulations are a significant issue in Texas.

Alcohol consumption is restricted to licensed bars, restaurants, and designated fan zones. Fans are advised to carry valid photo identification, as the legal drinking age in the United States is 21. Public consumption of alcohol on streets, in parks, or on public transport is prohibited. Driving under the influence is strictly penalised, with the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit set at 0.08%. Public intoxication is also an offence and can lead to arrest if an individual poses a danger to themselves or others.

Regarding controlled substances, fans should keep prescription medication in its original packaging with clear labels and patient details. For medicines containing controlled substances, a doctor’s letter or medical documentation translated into English is recommended. The possession, use, purchase, or distribution of cannabis or any other illegal drug is prohibited in Texas. Fans are also advised against accepting substances from strangers at events.

In terms of firearms, fans are encouraged to remain calm if they see someone openly carrying one and to pay attention to venue signage regarding weapon prohibitions. If an armed individual acts threateningly, calling 911 is recommended. Fans are advised not to stare at, point at, or comment loudly on individuals carrying firearms, nor to approach them or attempt to touch their weapons. Off-duty police officers are permitted to carry firearms inside sports venues.

Supporters are also urged to maintain public order, keeping celebrations within licensed venues and designated fan zones. Disruptive behaviour, such as loud or aggressive conduct, is discouraged. Physical altercations and blocking public walkways are also prohibited. Given the high temperatures in Texas during summer, often reaching 40°C, fans are advised to stay hydrated. The stadium also features an art collection with museum-quality pieces across its public spaces, including “Sky Mirror” by Anish Kapoor.

The Dallas Stadium is scheduled to host nine matches during the tournament, more than any other venue. England could potentially return to this stadium after their group stage match against Croatia, with a possible semi-final appearance in mid-July if they finish second in their group.
