Diallo’s decisive strike
Côte d’Ivoire secured a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener, with substitute Amad Diallo scoring a 90th-minute winner. The goal marked a significant moment for the Ivorian side, ending Ecuador’s impressive 19-game unbeaten streak that had lasted for nearly two years. Diallo’s strike came after a powerful run from Wilfried Singo, who surged up the right from his defensive position before delivering a cross.
Diallo, a Manchester United player, deftly guided the ball into the bottom left corner, giving the West African nation a dream start to their first World Cup finals appearance since 2014. This victory also represented Côte d’Ivoire’s first World Cup win against South American opposition. The result places Côte d’Ivoire level on points with Germany in Group E, following Germany’s 7-1 win against Curacao earlier in the day.
Despite being a surprise exclusion from the starting line-up, Diallo’s impact as a substitute proved crucial. His goal provides Côte d’Ivoire with a strong chance to qualify from Group E and potentially reach the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time in their history.

Ecuador’s missed opportunities
Ecuador had several opportunities throughout the match, hitting the woodwork three times. In the first half, John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar in the 23rd and 30th minutes, respectively. Veteran striker Enner Valencia also hit the post from a tight angle in the second half, highlighting Ecuador’s struggle to convert chances.
The South American side, known for keeping clean sheets, had not conceded a goal in 12 of their previous 19 games under manager Sebastian Beccacece. However, they were unable to find a breakthrough against Côte d’Ivoire. Ecuador’s first shot on target came in the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata forced Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into a save.
The match, played in Philadelphia, saw a packed stadium with a notable presence of Ecuadorian fans. Despite the strong support, these fans left disappointed as their team’s unbeaten run came to an end.

Even contest and key performances
The game was evenly contested, with both teams creating chances. Côte d’Ivoire also hit the woodwork, with Elye Wahi striking the crossbar early in the second half. The Ivorian squad, noted as the youngest at this World Cup, displayed promising play throughout the match.
Yan Diomande, a player of 19 years, delivered a dazzling performance for Côte d’Ivoire. He was particularly effective on Ecuador’s left side, picking up the ball at midfield in the 35th minute, beating Piero Hincapié, and setting up Nicolas Pépé, whose effort was blocked. Diomande continued to be a threat after the break, with his cross meeting Wahi’s run in the 52nd minute, though Wahi’s strike skimmed the crossbar.
Moments after switching to the left flank following two Côte d’Ivoire changes in the 56th minute, Diomande dribbled past Yeboah, Alan Franco, and Moises Caicedo before firing high. The decisive moment arrived in the 90th minute with Diallo’s goal, securing the victory for Côte d’Ivoire.
