Loan Deal for Garnacho
Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Chelsea for the loan of winger Alejandro Garnacho. The deal includes a conditional obligation to buy, which is considered easily achievable. Garnacho has completed a medical in Birmingham and has pre-agreed a four-year contract at Villa Park should the loan become permanent. The specific terms of the obligation to buy clause have not been publicly disclosed by either club, but it is anticipated to be activated upon the fulfillment of certain conditions, such as the number of appearances the Argentina international makes during the upcoming season.
Chelsea reportedly believes these conditions are readily attainable. This move follows Chelsea‘s acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a significant transfer fee. Garnacho’s departure from Stamford Bridge comes after he joined Chelsea from Manchester United last summer. His impact at Stamford Bridge has been limited to one Premier League goal, and the recent arrivals of Rogers and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda have increased the need to reduce the squad size.
Financial Considerations and UEFA Regulations
The transfer of Garnacho is not straightforward due to financial regulations. Both Aston Villa and Chelsea were recently fined by UEFA for breaches of financial sustainability rules. They are operating under strict scrutiny to avoid further sanctions. Chelsea, in particular, entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA last year, meaning they are subject to more stringent financial guidelines, even though they are not participating in European competitions this season.
Aston Villa generated a substantial accounting profit from the sale of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea. This profit is expected to significantly aid their compliance with both UEFA and Premier League financial constraints this season. However, the club also needs to rebuild its squad following several departures to ensure competitiveness. Garnacho was made available for transfer by Chelsea this summer, and Aston Villa was looking for a winger, with manager Unai Emery reportedly admiring the player.
A direct permanent transfer for Garnacho would complicate Aston Villa‘s ability to book the profit from the Rogers sale. This is due to UEFA guidelines that classify multiple player transfers between two clubs within a 45-day period as a ‘player exchange transaction’ if they have similar payment obligations. If the Garnacho and Rogers deals were considered a single transaction, Aston Villa‘s profit would be reduced in UEFA calculations to the net difference in fees.
A loan with an obligation to buy, while seemingly a way to guarantee a permanent sale, is also under scrutiny by UEFA. Regulators consider such a deal a permanent transfer from the outset if the condition is virtually certain to be met, which would still lead to it being classified as a player exchange transaction. The current deal for Garnacho is structured to have enough uncertainty to satisfy UEFA that a permanent move is not a foregone conclusion from the start.

Chelsea‘s financial position has reportedly improved since last summer, despite carrying significant debts. A core group of players, including Moises Caicedo, Estevao Willian, Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Levi Colwill, along with some highly-rated young prospects, are considered untouchable.
Garnacho’s first season at Chelsea saw him struggle for impact on the left flank, managing limited Premier League minutes across 25 appearances. This was less than both Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia achieved in the same position for Aston Villa last season. His goal involvement rate was also lower compared to Rogers and Buendia. If Garnacho joins Aston Villa, it may necessitate adjustments to Unai Emery‘s system, as Garnacho typically prefers to stay wide on the touchline rather than cutting inside, a contrast to the versatility shown by Buendia and Rogers.
