On May 5, 2026, Air Ghana welcomed a new addition to its fleet: a Boeing 737-400 freighter. This significant acquisition enhances Ghana’s air cargo capacity as the government simultaneously pursues plans for a new national airline.

The aircraft landed at the Ghana Airport Cargo Centre in Accra, marking a pivotal moment for Air Ghana, which now operates three Boeing 737-400 freighters. Karim Traboulsi, a representative from Air Ghana, stated, “The addition of the freighter will help improve delivery timelines, reduce logistical bottlenecks, and strengthen Ghana’s position as a regional cargo hub.” This upgrade is expected to bolster the country’s logistics and trade capacity.

Founded in 1993 and becoming operational in 2014 after securing its Air Operator Certificate, Air Ghana has over 30 years of experience in logistics and cargo handling. The new freighter is particularly well-suited for short- and medium-haul routes, providing reliable service that aligns with Air Ghana’s commitment to precision and consistency.

Ghana’s aviation landscape has faced challenges since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004. The government aims to establish a new national airline by 2027, seeking majority private investment to bring this vision to fruition. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, an official involved in the initiative, noted, “Ghana aims to complete the necessary regulatory processes and documentation within 12 months.”

A task force of ten members was formed in May 2025 to oversee this revival effort. The proposed national airline will not only operate long-haul passenger routes but also include a dedicated cargo division to further enhance the country’s air transport capabilities.

The arrival of this new freighter is expected to reinforce Ghana’s growing aviation and logistics sector. With this development, Air Ghana positions itself as an integrated logistics provider that combines air cargo services with ground handling and supply chain solutions.
