Anticipated Halftime Spectacle
The 2026 World Cup Final, set to feature defending champions Argentina against Spain, will include a first-ever halftime show. This event will take place on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, temporarily renamed New York-New Jersey Stadium. The show is curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and will be headlined by a lineup of international artists, including Madonna, Shakira, BTS, and Justin Bieber.
The musical event is designed to combine soccer and fandom, supporting the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. This initiative aims to raise over $100 million to expand access to soccer and education for children globally. FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the show will highlight this greater purpose, celebrating football, unity, and shared humanity.

The halftime show could potentially extend the traditional 15-minute halftime break. Reports from the Times of London suggest the break might last up to 30 minutes due to the production, setup, and teardown required for the performances. The laws of the game, governed by IFAB, typically state that players are entitled to a break not exceeding 15 minutes, citing player welfare concerns. IFAB previously rejected calls in 2021 to extend the halftime break to 25 minutes due to potential negative impacts on player welfare and safety from prolonged inactivity.
Performers and Collaborations
In addition to the headliners, other artists are scheduled to perform. The PS22 Chorus, a viral elementary school choir from New York City, will join Coldplay on stage. Nigerian singer-songwriter Burna Boy will perform with Shakira. Burna Boy expressed that representing Africa at the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Gustavo Dudamel, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and iconic characters from Sesame Street and The Muppets are also set to feature. Chris Martin enlisted assistance from characters like Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Animal in a promotional video to help find major stars for the performance.
Shakira, a veteran of World Cup collaborations, will perform her official 2026 FIFA World Cup song, “Dai Dai,” which features Burna Boy. This track blends Latin pop with Afrobeats and is described by FIFA as a vibrant celebration of football, culture, and unity. The duo also performed “Dai Dai” at the FIFA World Cup opening match in Mexico City. Shakira emphasized that the halftime show provides an opportunity to highlight the need for greater access to education for children, connecting her music career with her philanthropic efforts through the Barefoot Foundation, which she founded in 1997 to provide quality education in impoverished communities in Colombia.
