Uruguay have been eliminated from the World Cup after a defeat to Spain, a result that saw them finish with two points from three matches in Group H. The loss marked their second consecutive group stage exit from the tournament. Spain, already in a strong position to advance, secured the top spot in the group with this victory.
The decisive goal came in the 42nd minute when Alex Baena scored for Spain. This occurred after Uruguay had exerted some pressure, but Baena managed to turn and strike the ball low past goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, despite Muslera getting two hands on the shot. The build-up to the goal was contentious, as Uruguay felt their opponents should have put the ball out of play after Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte went down following a challenge and was subsequently stretchered off the pitch.
Muslera substituted as Spain secure top spot
Muslera, who was making his 137th appearance, was substituted at half-time and replaced by Sergio Rochet. This change followed what was described as Muslera’s third error leading to a goal in as many games. Despite the change, Spain maintained control for much of the second half, though they were unable to add another goal.
Uruguay made a late attempt to salvage their tournament hopes, but their efforts did not significantly challenge Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon. Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, who was back in the starting lineup, had two opportunities shortly after the first-half hydration break but could not convert them. Spain substitute Ferran Torres hit the crossbar late in the game, as Spain secured their second win of the tournament. This marks the first time Spain have achieved multiple wins at a World Cup since their victory in 2010.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde advanced to the last 32 from Group H as runners-up, following a draw against Saudi Arabia. Their qualification was confirmed after learning of Uruguay‘s defeat to Spain. Cape Verde‘s players and head coach, Bubista, celebrated their progression, which sets up a meeting with Lionel Messi and his team in Miami.

The match between Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia saw Cape Verde‘s goalkeeper, Vozinha, receive a strong reception from the crowd. Saudi Arabia, needing a win to progress, delivered a performance that did not yield the desired outcome. Despite some hefty challenges from Saudi Arabia players, they struggled to create clear chances. Cape Verde, having already secured draws against Spain and Uruguay, continued to look brighter in their match.
Cape Verde’s progression and upcoming fixture
The first significant goalmouth action in the Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia match came after 18 minutes when Wagner Pina blocked a shot from Sultan Mandash. Willy Semedo also had a shot saved by Mohammed al-Owais. A pause in play occurred when Hassan al-Tambakti of Saudi Arabia sustained an injury and was replaced by Ali Lajami.
Cape Verde‘s cause was further aided when news of Spain taking the lead against Uruguay filtered through. Saudi Arabia‘s offensive efforts remained minimal until stoppage time in the first half, when Mohamed Kanno had their best chance, but Vozinha made a save. In the second half, Jamairo Monteiro and Kevin Pina had opportunities for Cape Verde, but could not convert.

As the match progressed, Cape Verde appeared to be the more determined side. Saudi Arabia‘s best chance to score came in the 74th minute when substitute Nuno da Costa set up Laros Duarte, but al-Owais made a save. Later, Abdullah al-Hamdaan tested Vozinha from 15 yards, but the shot went straight to the goalkeeper. Cape Verde ultimately did enough to secure their draw and advance to the knockout stages.
