The proposal comes amidst increasing pressure on Infantino, including calls for his resignation. The 2030 World Cup is set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. The initial three matches of the tournament are planned for Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, commemorating the event’s 100th anniversary.
Infantino’s Re-election Bid and Declining Support
Infantino is seeking a formal statement of support from Morocco. Reports indicate that some of his usual allies, such as Saudi Arabia, have not yet endorsed him. To address the situation, Infantino reportedly directed key staff to an urgent meeting in Morocco this week, aiming to bolster his presidency.
During this meeting, unnamed sources told The Times that Infantino promised the 2030 World Cup final would be held at the Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco. This stadium, currently under construction, is designed to have a capacity of 115,000 seats. It is anticipated to become one of the largest football stadiums globally upon completion.
However, Infantino has seen a decline in support from several football associations. The English Football Association and the Welsh Football Association are among those who have withdrawn their backing for his re-election. This shift in support follows a decision by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to boycott all FIFA competitions. UEFA’s action was a response to Infantino‘s unsuccessful plan to sell stakes in the World Cup.
Controversy Surrounding the World Cup Final Host
The prospect of Morocco hosting the final has generated discussion, particularly given previous statements from Spanish Football Association president Rafael Louzán. Earlier this year, Louzán stated that Spain would lead the 2030 World Cup and that its final would be held in Spain. He has maintained this position, expressing confidence that there is no justification for Spain not to host the final of the Centenary World Cup.

The FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 2027 in Morocco, and another term would be Infantino‘s fourth and final term as president.
Backlash Over Commercial Rights Plan
The controversy surrounding Infantino intensified after his plan to sell up to a 20% stake in the World Cup to private investors was scrapped. This plan aimed to generate an estimated $4.2 billion. Critics argued that this initiative threatened FIFA‘s non-profit model by potentially over-commercializing the World Cup and prioritizing shareholders over the sport itself.
