Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has described the club’s pre-season victory over Western Sydney Wanderers as “very useful for the future.” Alonso highlighted the importance of addressing in-game challenges and finding solutions during matches.
The match, which was the opening fixture of Chelsea’s pre-season tour and Alonso’s first in the dugout, saw a total of ten goals scored, with six going to Chelsea. Dastan Satpayev opened the scoring for Chelsea, though the Wanderers responded with two goals. Dario Essugo then scored to level the contest by half-time.
Match Dynamics and Player Impact
The second half continued with back-and-forth play. The introduction of several first-team regulars after the hour-mark helped Chelsea finish strongly. Jamie Gittens scored shortly after entering the game, followed by Joao Pedro, who netted a hat-trick in nine minutes, securing a winning start in the Sydney Super Cup.
Alonso noted that there were moments in the game where the team struggled to find solutions, an experience he believes will be beneficial. He emphasised the positive aspect of correcting these issues during the match, viewing such moments as learning opportunities for game management.
The manager specifically mentioned the difficulty in finding solutions from inside when the opposition pressed high. He stressed the need for a different understanding of situations and the ability to make in-game changes, anticipating that such scenarios will occur frequently.
Alonso believes that the more situations the team faces where they struggle and then find solutions, the better they will become. He also highlighted the absence of injuries, the valuable experience gained by young players on tour, and the positive impact of senior players who received significant minutes.
Squad Development and Future Outlook
While most senior players in the matchday squad played, Romeo Lavia did not feature. Alonso explained that this was a precautionary measure due to Lavia feeling something in his hamstring. He expressed optimism that Lavia would be fit for the upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, stating there was no need to take risks in the friendly.
Reggie Watson played the full 90 minutes in Lavia’s absence and performed well. Alonso has previously spoken about building a squad with a balance of quality and mentality, aiming for maturity in both aspects, and starting the new season with good energy.
Chelsea has made several additions to their squad. These include Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, and full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
The club is also expected to announce the signing of French international defender Maxence Lacroix. At 26 years old, Lacroix would be Chelsea’s oldest signing since 2022. Additionally, there is an expectation that midfielder Valentin Barco, also from Strasbourg, will join in the coming weeks.
These potential incomings could result in nearly 40 players in the squad, indicating a need for player movement. Alonso acknowledged that there would likely be further changes before the transfer window closes, emphasising the need for flexibility and a clear plan.
Alonso has a plan to utilise attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers alongside Cole Palmer, and he believes Rogers can make an immediate impact. The manager’s focus remains on adapting to changes in the squad as the transfer window progresses.
