Chelsea seeks experienced forward
Chelsea are in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward is reportedly interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from Chelsea‘s side that a deal can be finalized. This potential transfer signals a shift in Chelsea‘s strategy, moving towards acquiring more experienced players.
According to influential owner Behdad Eghbali in April, Chelsea acknowledges that their previous model of signing young players requires an adjustment. Welbeck, who scored a career-high 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton last season, could fit this new approach. He has scored 51 goals in 201 matches since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020.
Welbeck signed a 12-month contract extension in March, with his current deal set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season. Brighton has not commented on the ongoing discussions. Reports indicate that Brighton would not prevent the striker from leaving if a fair price is agreed upon, as he has one year remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium.
Strategic shift at Stamford Bridge
The pursuit of Welbeck is seen as another indication of Chelsea‘s evolving transfer strategy this summer. This move follows earlier attempts to sign 33-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, though the Black Cats declined to sell the Switzerland captain. While the arrival of 23-year-old Morgan Rogers aligns with the club’s preference for younger players, he also brings significant Premier League experience.
Chelsea has already completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a club-record £117m. They are also close to finalizing a £52m move for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, 26, further adding experienced players ready for the Premier League. These acquisitions suggest a deliberate effort to bring in physically imposing players with prior experience in the league.
The club’s manager, Xabi Alonso, is reportedly seeking experienced and strong personalities to address shortcomings that contributed to the team’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. The interest in Welbeck, along with the earlier interest in Granit Xhaka and the move for Maxence Lacroix, highlights this change in approach.
Chelsea has a history of signing players from Brighton, including Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Robert Sanchez. Additionally, several Brighton staff members, such as sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell, have moved to Stamford Bridge over the past four years. However, the potential signing of a player in his mid-30s like Welbeck marks a different kind of transfer from Brighton.
Impact on current forwards
The potential arrival of Welbeck could cast further doubt on the futures of several existing Chelsea forwards. Joao Pedro is currently considered the club’s first-choice option. Other forwards on Chelsea‘s books include Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson.
Jackson, who recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, was expected to remain at Stamford Bridge but is now open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa. Delap, who moved from Ipswich for £30m a year ago, was keen to establish himself under new manager Xabi Alonso but is increasingly anticipated to depart. The future of Dutch striker Emegha is also uncertain, despite his recent move to Chelsea from Strasbourg, a club within the same ownership group.
Marc Guiu is reportedly available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25m. While Welbeck, given his age, might provide cover for Joao Pedro, his arrival could negatively impact the opportunities for these other forwards. Welbeck has scored 90 Premier League goals in 400 appearances throughout his career, including 13 last season.
Chelsea‘s key summer business so far includes several incoming and outgoing transfers. Incoming players include Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £43.5m, Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43m, Denner from Corinthians for £8.7m, Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty for £2.1m, and Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee.
