Chelsea secures defensive reinforcement
Chelsea has officially announced the signing of France international defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. The deal for the 26-year-old is reported to be worth £51m or £52m, and he has committed to a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032, or a six-year deal. This transfer marks Lacroix’s move to west London as the club prepares for its first season under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Lacroix expressed his enthusiasm for joining Chelsea, stating his pride in being part of the club’s project and his eagerness to start playing. He mentioned his desire to write a part of the Chelsea story with players like Reece James and Morgan Rogers. He also called Chelsea the “best club in the world” and highlighted the club’s tradition of winning, expressing his ambition to lift trophies.
The defender joined Crystal Palace from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2024 for an initial fee of £15.5m. During his time at Palace, he made 55 appearances across all competitions. He was also part of the Palace squad that won the Uefa Conference League, which was the club’s first major European trophy. Lacroix also made three appearances for France during the 2026 World Cup, where Les Bleus finished fourth after a defeat by England in the bronze-medal match.
Strategic shift in transfer policy
Lacroix’s arrival is Chelsea’s third signing of the summer transfer window, following Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra. Additionally, deals for winger Geovany Quenda and forward Emmanuel Emegha were agreed upon in 2025, with both players formally completing their moves this month. Chelsea is also reportedly in talks to sign striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton and midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford.
The acquisition of Lacroix signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer policy. He is the first player aged 26 or older that Chelsea has signed for a fee since 2022. This change in strategy, which aims to target more experienced players, has been embraced by manager Xabi Alonso. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali indicated that Chelsea would “tweak” their model to add experience to their core of young players, including Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, and Levi Colwill.

The club’s attempt to sign Granit Xhaka, 34, from Sunderland, despite being unsuccessful, further underscored this change in recruitment strategy. Lacroix’s arrival, alongside the £117m arrival of Rogers, fulfills Chelsea’s pledge to make at least two ready-made signings.

Crystal Palace had sought around £55m during negotiations for Lacroix. The defender gave the green light for the move last week after France’s World Cup campaign concluded.

Lacroix has been a consistent performer in the league since his move to Selhurst Park. His recovery speed contributes to his effectiveness as a one-on-one defender. Statistics indicate that he has faced 50 or more one-on-one situations in the past two seasons and has won the ball more often than not. Furthermore, he ranks third for clearances and seventh for aerial duels won, showcasing his defensive capabilities. His former manager, Oliver Glasner, who worked with him at both Wolfsburg and Crystal Palace, noted his significant development.
