WhatsApp is supposed to be a safe haven and community but Cybercrime is on the rise, and attacks are getting faster, more nuanced and increasingly sophisticated. With Hackers and Scammers joining nearly every group of WhatsApp, the need to be alert as a user of WhatsApp and to take the safety of your account into your hands is an important as helping to protect other users whether you know them or not.

One way to keep WhatsApp safe is to report any suspecting account that comes into your DM and start dropping all manner of suspicious links. The danger is that, if you click just any link shared by others who are not admins to a group you belong to, you are open to being scammed or hacked on WhatsApp.

  1. You must communicate with known contacts
  2. Ask for permission and respect boundaries when you are communicating with others. You must seek their permission before adding them to any group.
  3. Think twice before forwarding messages. If you are not sure of the safety of the link you are about to share, do not forward it.
  4. Stop sending unwanted messages as soon as the contact askes you to stop. Do not send it in the first place if you know it is wrong.
  5. Do not add people to your broadcast list without their permission.

All the above laws need to be obeyed but if someone disobeys these and become a nuisance, you can tack action and get him or her reported. If you are lenient, you may only block the individual.

To report a WhatsApp account that has been sending you messages you do not want to receive. Follow this steps.

  1. Type a message to the person explaining what he or she is doing on WhatsApp which you do not like. In that same message, tell WhatsApp to ban the account for the actions he or she is taking which go against the community guidelines. An example of such a message is this… “This is a scammer… WhatsApp ban him/her…he/she is posting such links to people he/she does not know so that when the click the link , he can hack their WhatsApp. This is against the your policy. Please take action and ban this number to make WhatsApp safer”
  2. After that, take a screenshot of the message from the person and the responses you gave him or her and share with the person again.
  3. Make an option to report the number to WhatsApp.

Now, after this, WhatsApp will have all conversations between the two of you and will make its own judgement. Note that the more people report your number the faster you will get banned. Hence if you do not have any business doing in the DM of someone, do not go worrying them.
