Real Madrid Secures Young Talent
Real Madrid has officially completed the signing of Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal potentially worth up to £120m (140m euros). The 19-year-old winger has agreed to a seven-year contract with the Spanish club, extending until the summer of 2033. This transfer could see his price tag exceed the £115m (133.9m euros) that Real Madrid paid for Jude Bellingham in June 2023.
Reports indicate that Real Madrid will pay an initial €125m, with an additional €10m in add-ons. This total would surpass the fee paid for Bellingham, which was believed to be up to €134m including add-ons. Diomande’s move makes him the most expensive African player in history, exceeding the £72m Arsenal spent on Nicolas Pepe in 2019.
The transfer follows weeks of negotiations, during which Paris Saint-Germain had been considered frontrunners for the teenager. However, the Champions League winners withdrew from a potential move after a £102.5m bid was rejected. PSG later stated that the asking transfer fee and salary demands were disproportionate. Liverpool also expressed interest, with an initial bid of £69m rejected in June, as they sought a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
Diomande’s Journey and Impact
Diomande’s senior career began with a few starts for Leganes, where he scored in two of his six appearances. He then moved from his native Ivory Coast to an academy in the United States before joining Spanish side Leganes in 2025 and subsequently Leipzig later that year. His performances quickly garnered attention, leading Leipzig to pay €20m to bring him to the Bundesliga. Leganes is due a 5% sell-on fee from this transfer.
During his time at Leipzig, Diomande was named the Bundesliga’s Young Player of the Season for 2025-26, having scored 12 goals and registered eight assists in the competition. Across all competitions in his first full season in Europe with Leipzig, he scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists, attracting interest from several major clubs.
Diomande also featured in all four of Ivory Coast’s World Cup games, where they were eliminated in the round of 32 by Norway. His explosive pace, dribbling, creativity, and attacking impact have made him a highly sought-after prospect. He is comfortable playing on either wing, capable of cutting inside from the left to threaten goal with his right foot, or using his pace and crossing ability from the right to create opportunities for teammates.
Real Madrid’s Strategic Acquisition
Diomande’s signing aligns with Real Madrid’s strategy of acquiring elite young talents before they reach their peak. The 120m euros fee reflects the club’s high valuation of his potential, with the belief that he can become a key player for the future. His versatility is a significant asset, fitting well with Real Madrid’s search for greater consistency in the right-wing position.
He is the sixth summer signing for Real Madrid under new head coach Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi. Diomande formed a strong partnership with right-back Ridle Baku at Leipzig, and his attacking threat could be further enhanced by linking up with experienced full-backs like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cucurella at Real Madrid.
In a statement, Diomande expressed gratitude to Leipzig fans for their support and described the move to Madrid as a “childhood dream come true.” He also thanked the management at RB Leipzig for facilitating the transfer despite his existing contract.
